The humble faux fur jacket is such a brilliant staple that it has well and truly stood the test of time. Its roots can be traced back to the late 19th century, with its popularity helped in large part by the ‘synthetic revolution’ of the 1940s and ’50s, when faux fur became a much more affordable alternative to real fur.
Since then, we’ve seen countless iterations of the faux fur jacket, from cropped and longline silhouettes to belted styles and classic wool coats finished with faux fur cuffs for an added touch of elevation. The latter has gained serious traction in recent years, with the Princess of Wales making a particularly strong case for the style back in 2023 on Christmas Day.
It’s hard to imagine, then, how the style could be updated when there are already so many versions out there. But there is a subtle way to breathe new life into this popular staple, and that’s by introducing it in a fresh colour. Luckily, the high street knows a thing or two about this, and Zara has released a brand new fluffy jacket in the season’s newest shade: Tobacco.

This new shade borrows the rich, chocolatey hues of brown, while its smoky undertones nod to warmer, rustier shades of orange. In the right autumnal light, when the low sun makes an appearance, those tones really come to life, bringing out a completely different side to the jacket.

It might not seem like a huge change, of course, but this unexpected colour gives the fluffy staple a fresh new identity. And, if the current appetite for autumnal outerwear is anything to go by, we think it could sell out at record speed.
Of course, the jacket comes in black, too if you like to stick to the status quo - as far as jacket's go, that is. Pair either with similarly muted shades that look brilliant for the season, and if you're feeling experimental, drape a scarf with a pop of colour of print around your waist.
