WASHINGTON – Trump led US administration revoked more than 300,000 US visas since January 2025, intensifying its immigration crackdown. From stricter visa enforcement to increased social media screening, the latest developments are raising fresh questions for foreign nationals hoping to enter or remain in the United States.
US State Department announced the latest figures on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, highlighting a sharp increase in visa cancellations during Trump’s second term. The latest tally represents a substantial rise from the more than 175,000 visas the department reported revoking as of August 10, indicating that more than 125,000 additional visas have been canceled since that announcement.
The administration defended its hard-line immigration policies as necessary to protect national security, enforce US laws and prevent illegal immigration.
Trump repeatedly presented stricter immigration enforcement and deportation measures as central to his efforts to strengthen domestic security. His administration has expanded scrutiny of foreign nationals, including individuals accused of legal violations, fraud or activities considered threats to national security.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott announced the latest figures on the social media platform X, asserting that the administration had revoked visas faster than any previous US government. Pigott also warned that foreign nationals who violate US laws, commit fraud or threaten national security while in the country on visas would face strict enforcement measures.
The administration’s approach has drawn criticism from human rights advocates, particularly over visa revocations involving foreign nationals who participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations against Israeli military operations in Gaza.
US remains a close ally of Israel, and government actions against some foreign participants in these protests have triggered concerns about whether immigration enforcement is being used to penalize political expression. Rights advocates argue that such cases raise fundamental questions about the balance between national security and freedom of speech, particularly when foreign nationals face immigration consequences over their political activities.
The controversy intensified scrutiny of the administration’s treatment of international students, foreign workers and other non-US citizens who engage in political demonstrations.
Visa cancellations involving foreign nationals who commented on social media about the killing of conservative American commentator Charlie Kirk have also attracted criticism. Opponents of the administration’s policies say such cases raise concerns about the limits of protected expression and whether immigration powers could be used against individuals for their online statements.
The administration, however, maintains a broader focus on enforcing immigration laws and addressing conduct it considers unlawful or threatening.
Alongside visa cancellations and deportation efforts, the Trump administration has intensified scrutiny of social media accounts belonging to immigrants and visa applicants. Under these measures, authorities review applicants’ online activities as part of immigration-related screening, a practice that has raised concerns among civil liberties groups over privacy, surveillance and the potential impact on political expression.
Human rights advocates warn that expanded monitoring could discourage foreign nationals from expressing political opinions or participating in demonstrations for fear of jeopardizing their immigration status. Some critics further allege that national security concerns are being invoked too broadly to justify action against government critics and immigrant communities.
Somali-American community in Minnesota has been cited in debates over whether allegations involving particular individuals can lead to heightened scrutiny of wider immigrant populations.
Trump’s immigration crackdown has extended beyond efforts to prevent illegal entry into the United States. During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump pledged to curb illegal immigration. However, his administration has also tightened certain requirements affecting people seeking to enter the country legally.
One prominent example is the introduction of substantial fees for certain work visas, increasing the financial burden on some employers and foreign professionals seeking to work in the United States.
These measures have added to concerns that legal immigration pathways could become more expensive and difficult to navigate, even for applicants who intend to comply with US immigration laws.
Human rights organizations and civil liberties advocates have criticized the broader enforcement campaign, arguing that its effects may extend beyond individuals accused of violating immigration rules.
The administration, by contrast, maintains that enforcing immigration laws and protecting national security are legitimate government responsibilities.
The revocation of more than 300,000 visas underscores the scale of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement campaign since January 2025.
With visa cancellations, deportation efforts, expanded social media screening and stricter requirements for some legal immigration routes, the administration’s policies are reshaping the environment for foreign nationals seeking to enter or remain in the United States.
While officials describe the measures as necessary to uphold the law and safeguard national security, critics warn that their implementation could have far-reaching consequences for civil liberties, political expression and immigrant communities.
