Trent Alexander-Arnold has struggled at Real Madrid, and his career at the club could take another unwanted turn after Jose Mourinho overlooked the right-back for Sunday’s victory over Sevilla.
Real Madrid secured an impressive 4-1 win against Sevilla, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice, Arda Guler finding the net, and Yan Diomande continuing his fine run.
However, Alexander-Arnold’s absence from the starting XI for the second game stood out. He didn’t even get minutes off the bench.
Mourinho opted to deploy midfielder Fede Valverde at right-back, leaving actual right-backs Alexander-Arnold and Denzel Dumfries on the bench.
The decision raises further questions about Alexander-Arnold’s standing in Madrid.
Alexander-Arnold moved to the Spanish giants expecting to establish himself as one of their most important players, having spent his entire senior career at Liverpool before making the switch.
His exceptional passing range, creativity and ability to dictate play from deep made him an attractive addition, but injuries decimated his first season in Spain.
Come this season, securing a regular starting place has proved more difficult than anticipated for the England international.
Mourinho’s preference for Valverde in an unfamiliar defensive position suggests the former Liverpool star has plenty of work to do to convince his manager.
Competition for places is expected at a club of Madrid’s stature, but watching from the sidelines could force Alexander-Arnold to reconsider his future when the summer transfer window opens.
Liverpool and Man City could offer an escape route
A return to the Premier League could be the most appealing option for the 28-year-old, with Liverpool potentially having the strongest incentive to bring him back.
The Reds have struggled to find consistency at right-back since his departure, with Jeremie Frimpong failing to deliver after his arrival.
Alexander-Arnold’s return would give Liverpool a familiar creative outlet and could address a major problem, although it is hard to see their fans taking him back.
Manchester City could also emerge as an alternative destination if they decide to strengthen at right-back next summer.
However, they could be relegated and transfer-banned if their guilty verdict over their Premier League financial rule breaches stands after their appeal.
