A new photographic exhibition in Lagoa is inviting visitors to discover one of the Algarve’s most important marine habitats.
“Parque Natural Marinho do Recife do Algarve – Pedra do Valado” will be on display at the Carlos do Carmo Auditorium from October 13 to November 30, with free admission.
The exhibition focuses on the Pedra do Valado reef, part of one of the largest shallow coastal rocky reef systems in Portugal, stretching along the coast between Albufeira, Lagoa and Silves.
Its natural conditions support exceptional marine biodiversity, including numerous species considered important both commercially and for conservation.
Developed by Fundação Oceano Azul, in collaboration with the CCMAR – Centre of Marine Sciences of the Algarve and the international Revive Our Ocean initiative, the exhibition aims to raise awareness of ocean conservation and the role of marine protected areas.
Visitors will be able to learn more about the reef’s habitats, species and ecological value, as well as the process that led to the creation of the protected area.
The Algarve Reef Marine Natural Park – Pedra do Valado is described as the first marine protected area created in mainland Portugal in the 21st century.
The exhibition also highlights the importance of protecting the reef as part of wider efforts to create a healthier and more resilient ocean.
It can be visited free of charge from Tuesday to Saturday, between 2pm and 5pm, until November 30.
