The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against five individuals in connection with the recovery of an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by the proscribed terrorist organisation ULFA (I) in Guwahati, Assam, on August 15, 2024. The chargesheet was submitted before the NIA Special Court in Guwahati.
According to the NIA, those named in the chargesheet include Paresh Baruah, Chairman and SS Commander-in-Chief of ULFA (I), along with Kanak Ch Gogoi alias Aisheng Asom, Jahnu Boruah, Bhargab Gogoi, and Sumu Gogoi. They face charges under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, and the Explosive Substances Act, 1908.
The case was initially registered at Panbazar Police Station on August 16, 2024, as Panbazar PS Case No. 202/2024, and later re-registered by the NIA on February 27, 2025. Investigators allege that the accused conspired to wage war against the Government of India by planning multiple IED blasts across Assam, including the device recovered at Motilal Nehru Road, Panbazar. Authorities stated that the plot was intended to cause casualties, damage property, and instill fear among the public, thereby threatening India’s unity, integrity, security, and sovereignty.
The NIA confirmed that further investigation into the case is ongoing.
