Hundreds of mourners packed into a San Francisco church to bid farewell to slain retired police officer Ann Mannix and her daughter Katie Mannix — as the pair’s devastated loved ones condemned the “brutal act of violence” behind their deaths.
Mannix, 65, and her 24-year-old daughter were honored Friday at a funeral Mass at St. Ignatius Parish attended by top San Francisco elected officials and scores of law enforcement officers, who accompanied the caskets of the deceased women along with Mannix’s two surviving children and extended family members.
“We shouldn’t be here,” said Richard Correia, Ann Mannix’s brother, in a eulogy for his slain sister.
Correia, also a retired SFPD officer, condemned the “violence” of the Oct. 11 murder-suicide by Ann’s husband Kevin Mannix and shared tributes to his “fantastic, wonderful” sibling who was a beloved mother of three and trailblazing cop, leading SFPD’s SWAT team and becoming deputy chief before she retired in 2021.
Ann Mannix was a gifted athlete and dedicated officer who naturally rose through the ranks at SFPD, her brother shared.
Correia cited “marital strife” and alluded to unwanted life transitions that preceded the horrifying shooting at the family’s home in Marin County, thanking friends who provided support to the family after the shocking tragedy.
“Ann was special from her first day to her last,” Correia said.
Retired officer Kevin Mannix, 68, gunned down his wife and child before taking his own life at their home on a quiet street outside of San Francisco, authorities said.
HIs name went unmentioned at the Mass.
Although a specific motive hasn’t been identified, friends of Ann Mannix said their marriage had been troubled and was headed towards divorce.
The retired top cop was enjoying a busy calendar of travel, volunteer work and socializing with her wide circle of pals before her death, friends told The California Post.
“She was upbeat and looking forward to so many great and fun things in the future,” Martha Ehmann Conte previously told The Post.
“She was a joy and a light.”
Mannix’s elder daughter Lauren Mannix and son Kevin Mannix shared emotional memories of their mother, whom they described as an kind, loving and big-hearted, and their young sister, who was due to graduate from nursing school next year.
Katie Mannix was “spunky, beautiful, smart, kind,” a tearful Lauren Mannix said of her sister, who was seven years her junior.
“She was the perfect addition.”
The younger Kevin Mannix recalled a caring and fun-loving mother who was like a surrogate parent to many in the community.
Fr. Greg Bonfiglio, who presided over the funeral Mass, called the senseless murders of the two women “evil” and a “terrible violation of love and trust” and shared words of comfort to the friends, family and other well-wishers who packed each pew at the public funeral.
A previously scheduled memorial event organized by the San Francisco Police Officers Association was canceled because the family felt it was too soon, The Post previously reported.
The Bay Area Law Enforcement Assistance Fund is collecting donations to assist the Mannix children, according to the police union.
