Mexican superstar Cristian Castro's most recent viral era began with a confession: he likes doing nothing. An old interview resurfaced on TikTok and YouTube, turning his laid-back routine into a meme and prompting a fresh round of interviews about his "art of doing nothing." ViX later built that joke into a World Cup campaign, showing Castro relaxing in a thong while urging viewers to watch the tournament.
The joke followed him onto the concert stage. At an Auditorio Nacional show in August, Castro teased the audience for coming out on a Monday after he had told people not to do anything. Then he sang the hits that have kept his concerts going, including "No Podrás," "Azul" and "Nunca Voy a Olvidarte."
Now Billboard is recognizing his extraordinary career. Castro will receive the Artistic Achievement Award at the 2026 Billboard Latin Music Awards and perform during the ceremony Oct. 22 at Miami's James L. Knight Center. The show airs live on Telemundo and Peacock at 8 p.m. ET.
Castro's online visibility has also collided with music collaborations and viral campaigns. In May, he joined a TikTok dance trend for Eddy Herrera's merengue "Tú eres ajena." A video of Castro dancing with Ecuadorian model Mara Topic drew nearly 1 million views within hours, according to Diario Libre. Earlier this year, fitness instructors in Spain used Castro's "Azul" in a workout challenge built around doing a burpee every time he sings the word "azul."
Those moments have introduced the singer to social-media users who may know the memes before the catalog. Castro's chart history stretches back to 1992, when "No Podrás" became his first entry on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart, peaking at No. 3. He has since scored six No. 1s on the chart, including "Nunca Voy a Olvidarte," "Amor" and "Azul," according to the award announcement. His 2010 José José tribute album, Viva el Príncipe, spent seven weeks at No. 1 on Top Latin Albums.
"Receiving the Billboard Artistic Achievement Award is a tremendous honor and a very special moment in my career," Castro said in a statement. He said it meant a great deal to know that listeners had made his songs part of their lives.
The award has previously gone to artists including José José, Armando Manzanero, Carlos Santana, Marco Antonio Solís and Roberto Carlos. Castro's Nada Solo Éxitos tour continues this fall, with U.S. dates listed through 2027.
For Castro, the Billboard stage will bring the two versions of his current public profile together: the singer whose old hits still fill his set list and the internet personality who turned "doing nothing" into a punchline.
