St Mary’s College students secure third place in CMBC Challenge with RFID-based tourism project
Shillong, Oct 12: What if tourists could be charged differently depending on how crowded a destination is? A team of students from St Mary’s College, Shillong, has proposed just such an idea, winning third place in the Chief Minister’s Business Catalyst (CMBC) Challenge with its project, Smart Tourism.
Led by Evidency Paslein, the team has proposed using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) cards to track the number of visitors at a tourist spot and adjust entry fees according to crowd levels.
Under the proposed system, visitors would be issued RFID cards at the entrance. The system would record how many people were inside the destination, helping operators monitor crowd levels and determine whether the site was nearing its capacity.
“If the tourist place is crowded, that means the price will increase, depending on the capacity of the tourist spot. And if the tourist spot is less crowded, the price will be a little lower,” Paslein said while explaining the concept.
The team hopes that varying entry fees could help regulate visitor flow, particularly at busy destinations during peak tourist periods.
The project also gave the students an opportunity to explore entrepreneurship despite coming from non-business backgrounds.
Paslein said the team was grateful for the exposure, networking opportunities and guidance received through the programme.
“We are so grateful to be here, to be exposed to this Business Catalyst programme, and we thank our honourable Chief Minister for this opportunity,” she said.
She also thanked their mentor, Sameer, and mentors from IIM Shillong, along with IIM Shillong, PRIME Meghalaya and the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA), for guiding the team.
The third-place finish marks a milestone for the students as they explore ways to turn their idea into a workable solution for tourism management in Meghalaya.
