New Balance’s latest lifestyle sneaker, the futuristic-yet-familiar 983, made its retail debut at the top of the month, and it’s already adding a colorful new look to its arsenal.
Following the launch of the 983’s debut Shadow Blue/Zinc Blue colorway, New Balance quietly launched another style which complements the blue makeup in a contrasting Shadow Red/Pebble combination. The sculptural sneaker mixes a mesh base with glossy, patent leather-like synthetic overlays, combining a predominantly red upper with shades of gray and plum-like details.
Standing out on the Shadow Red colorway are its oval-shaped Abzorb SBS cushioning pods, which are colored in a shade reminiscent of what was seen on the Shadow Blue look. This design choice allows the tech to stand out even more, drawing attention to one of the 983’s signature details.
According to New Balance, the 983 was developed to reimagine the brand’s 2000s-era performance running shoes. The result is a retro-informed everyday lifestyle shoe which fits in seamlessly among today’s trending Y2K-referencing sneakers.
To introduce the 983, New Balance tapped signature athlete Coco Gauff for a campaign that highlights the model’s versatility across a wide range of outfits.
Along with the debut colorway and the newly released Shadow Red iteration, several other New Balance 983s have been previewed including a classic gray look shared by Yue Wu, a footwear designer at the Boston-based sportswear company. And soon, the 983 will get even more vibrant with a neon-colored Fennel Seed makeup that is already beginning to pop up at retailers.
In other New Balance news, the brand has confirmed a Nov. 6 launch for the latest installment of its iconic 990 series, the 990v7.
The New Balance 983 Shadow Red/Pebble is available now from newbalance.com and select retailers for $160. The sneaker’s style code is U9837SO.
