Kathmandu, October 16
Nepal Police plans to expand its use of artificial intelligence (AI), drones and anti-drone technology, and establish a dedicated structure to combat scams as part of efforts to modernise the organisation, Inspector General of Police Dan Bahadur Karki has said.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the 71st Police Day on Friday, Karki said the force would increase its use of modern technology to improve crime investigation and the effectiveness of police services.
According to Karki, plans are being advanced to establish an AI and Advanced Analytics Cell, a Drone and Anti-Drone Unit under aerial security, and an Integrated Anti-Scam Centre.
He said the proposed structures would help improve the police force’s operational efficiency and strengthen its capacity to respond to emerging forms of crime.
“I express my gratitude to journalists, civil society, communities and all well-wishers who have contributed to the reform of Nepal Police,” Karki said. “Honouring the sacrifice of fallen police personnel, I reaffirm my commitment to building a citizen-friendly, accountable and technology-oriented police organisation.”
Karki also said plans were underway to upgrade the Nepal Police Hospital into a teaching hospital, with the longer-term goal of establishing a Nepal Police Medical College.
The initiative is expected to help provide quality healthcare to police personnel, their families and the general public, he said.
Emphasising the importance of organisational effectiveness, Karki said maintaining a clear chain of command, discipline, accountability and coordination was essential for the police force.
He added that cooperation and coordination among all stakeholders would be necessary to make the organisation more accountable.
Police personnel recognised for outstanding performance were honoured at the ceremony.
