The following article contains spoilers from the episode of Coronation Street dated October 14. It hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX and YouTube.
Sarah Platt’s (Tina O’Brien) murder trial kicked off in Coronation Street today, and it got off to a very bad start.
Earlier this year, Sarah endured a showdown with Todd Grimshaw’s (Gareth Pierce) abusive partner Theo Silverton (James Cartwright).
Sarah attacked Theo with a metal pole, which resulted in him falling over some scaffolding. Horrified that her actions had just killed a man, Sarah called Gary Windass (Mikey North) for help.
The duo kept the truth about Theo a secret for ages, but Sarah’s guilt ultimately meant she couldn’t keep quiet forever. She was arrested by DS Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicky Myers), and has been behind bars ever since.
The Platt clan arrived at court today ahead of Sarah’s trial. Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) was already anxious, as she’s currently busy hiding the fact that she’s pregnant with her mum’s ex-boyfriend’s baby.

As the trial began, Lisa took to the stand for questioning. Asked about when Sarah confessed to killing Theo, Lisa admitted that hiding the truth for so long wasn’t normal behaviour for someone who supposedly ended a man’s life in self defence.
Lisa told the truth but, in doing so, she didn’t help Sarah.
Next up was Danielle (Natalie Anderson), Theo’s ex-wife.
She confirmed in her statement that while her relationship with Theo often featured fights, he was never physically violent towards her. When the barrister suggested that Theo and Todd’s relationship featured them ‘trading blows’, Sarah leapt to Todd’s defence.
This was the beginning of Sarah making another big mistake. Because Danielle believed that Theo would never hurt a woman, Sarah piped up again and tried to tell the jury that she knew Theo was going to kill her on that fateful night.
The chaos caused by Sarah meant the Judge was forced to pause the trial. Sarah was taken back to her cell, and her family were left very worried.
In the pub, David hoped that things would go in their favour tomorrow, and made it clear that all hope is resting with Todd.
Taking to the stand in court will see Todd forced to recall what Theo put him through, while ensuring he doesn’t trip over his words and say something that threatens Sarah’s future.
He’s already anxious – can Todd do it?
Will he be the one to free Sarah?
