The Kano State House of Assembly has referred Nasarawa constituency lawmaker Yusuf Bello Aliyu to its Committee on Ethics and Privileges over a controversial social media post allegedly ridiculing Governor Abba Yusuf.
The decision was reached during Tuesday’s plenary after lawmakers debated a motion calling for an investigation into the post, which reportedly showed Aliyu holding a rabbit by its ears while making remarks considered offensive to the governor.
The motion was moved by Abdulhamid Abdul, who represents Minjibir constituency, during a sitting presided over by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore.
Abdul urged the House to investigate the circumstances surrounding the viral post and determine whether the lawmaker’s conduct violated the standards expected of elected representatives.
He argued that members of the Assembly had a responsibility to protect the institution’s reputation and maintain public confidence in their conduct, both online and offline.
The lawmaker also called for an apology and appropriate disciplinary measures if the allegations were established.
Supporting the motion, Musa Kachako, who represents Takai constituency, said the controversy highlighted the need for public officials to exercise caution when using social media.
Kachako urged the Assembly to consider legal measures for addressing abusive online content, arguing that elected representatives should communicate responsibly on digital platforms.
Other lawmakers who backed the motion included Sulaiman Mukhtar, representing Madobi constituency, and Usman Abubakar Tasiu, who represents Kiru constituency.

They maintained that political disagreements should not be an excuse for conduct perceived as disrespectful to public officeholders or institutions.
However, the lawmakers also emphasised the need for a fair investigation, insisting that the committee must establish the facts before reaching any conclusion on whether Aliyu committed an offence.
Ethics Committee Given Deadline To Report Findings
Following the deliberations, Speaker Falgore referred the matter to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges for further investigation.
He directed the committee to present its findings to the House on Wednesday.
The committee’s report is expected to help lawmakers determine the next steps in the matter.
