Stablecoin issuer Tether and investor HIVEN back AI payments startup AIsa in an extended seed round.
Tether has taken a strategic stake in AIsa, a startup building payment infrastructure for autonomous AI agents. The investment closed as part of a seed extension round, according to reporting from Cointelegraph. HIVEN also joined the round, and combined funding for AIsa now exceeds $9 million.
AIsa focuses on enabling AI agents to send and receive payments without constant human intervention. This niche has drawn growing interest as AI systems take on more autonomous tasks, from booking services to managing digital subscriptions. Payment rails built for software agents differ from traditional consumer-facing systems, often requiring faster settlement and programmable controls.
Tether's involvement signals continued interest from the stablecoin issuer in infrastructure that could expand use cases for its USDT token. Stablecoins are increasingly positioned as a settlement layer for machine-to-machine transactions, where speed and predictable value matter more than volatility exposure. If AI agents begin transacting at scale, demand for stable, low-friction payment rails could grow alongside them.
The seed extension structure suggests AIsa had already raised initial seed capital before bringing in Tether and HIVEN. Extension rounds typically allow early-stage startups to bring on new strategic backers without resetting valuation terms from the original raise. This approach lets companies secure additional runway and strategic partnerships while preserving existing investor relationships.
Tether has built a broad investment portfolio beyond its core stablecoin business in recent years. The company has backed ventures spanning energy, communications, and now AI-driven financial infrastructure. Analysts of the stablecoin sector have noted Tether's pattern of diversifying into adjacent technology areas that could reinforce demand for its tokens.
Details on AIsa's specific product roadmap, team size, or timeline for broader deployment were not disclosed in the available reporting. The company's focus on agent-to-agent and agent-to-merchant payments places it within a developing category of crypto-AI convergence projects. These projects aim to give autonomous software direct access to financial rails traditionally reserved for human-initiated transactions.
Market Impact
The investment adds to a growing list of crypto firms exploring infrastructure for AI-driven commerce. Should AI agents begin handling routine payments at scale, stablecoin issuers like Tether could see expanded transaction volume tied to machine-initiated transfers. This remains an early-stage use case, and widespread adoption of agent payments has not yet materialized.
For the broader stablecoin sector, Tether's backing of AIsa reinforces a narrative connecting digital dollars to emerging AI applications. Competing stablecoin issuers and payment networks may face pressure to pursue similar partnerships if agent-based commerce gains traction among businesses and developers.
Tether's stake in AIsa reflects a broader push to position stablecoins as the settlement layer for AI-driven transactions. The seed extension round's outcome will depend on whether agent-based payment tools find real demand among businesses and developers.
