KUALA LUMPUR: U Mobile Sdn Bhd and Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore 4G and 5G provision at the Immigration, Customs and Quarantine Complex (ICQC) in Bukit Chagar, Johor Baru, before the opening of the Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link.
In a joint statement today, U Mobile and MRT Corp said the collaboration aims to ensure the cross-border transport gateway is ready to provide reliable mobile connectivity when the RTS Link commences operation.
This would support a more connected and convenient travel experience between Malaysia and Singapore.
"Reliable mobile connectivity within the facility will be essential to support everyday travel needs, from accessing journey information and coordinating onward transport to staying connected with family, colleagues and businesses.
"The initiative will also support the connectivity needs of about 600 government agency personnel currently based at the complex," the statement said.
Under the MoU, U Mobile and MRT Corp will explore the provision of 4G and 5G in-building coverage at the ICQC by connecting U Mobile's network to MRT Corp's infrastructure, subject to a definitive agreement, technical requirements and relevant approvals.
U Mobile chief executive officer (CEO) Wong Heang Tuck said through the collaboration, the telco aims to extend its 4G and 5G network coverage throughout the ICQC, helping government agency personnel, commuters and visitors stay connected at this important cross-border gateway.
"This initiative reflects our continued commitment to extending quality digital connectivity across strategic public infrastructure and high-traffic locations, supporting Malaysia's digital and economic growth," he said.
Meanwhile, MRT Corp CEO Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim said reliable mobile connectivity is an important part of the passenger journey, from accessing information to making onward travel arrangements.
"The experience of travelling on the RTS Link begins well before passengers board the train and continues long after they disembark.
Every touchpoint matters, from the ease of moving through our facilities to the ability to access information, communicate and make travel arrangements without interruption," he said in the statement.
The partnership is part of a wider effort to bring together expertise and services to improve passenger experience. — BERNAMA
