The Buffalo Bills have made an incredible start to the season with a 5-1 record, but that success has not silenced concerns about their defensive leadership. While their offense has been clinical, ongoing issues in the secondary and questions about the defense’s ability to finish games have drawn attention early on.
Amid those concerns, former Bills All-Pro safety Jordan Poyer’s wife, Rachel Bush, ruffled a few feathers with her Week 6 take.
Bills Fans Make Jordan Poyer Demand After His Wife’s Cryptic Post
The Bills entered the 2026 season with a revamped coaching structure, led by head coach Joe Brady and defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard. Amid the team’s strong start, Poyer boldly declared last month that his former team is the best in the NFL this season.
Though Poyer, a fan favorite, is out of the league, his continued appreciation for the franchise remains appreciated by the fanbase, which explains why they took note of a tweet posted by his wife this weekend.
“All I’m going to say is it’s obvious how important leadership and connection within a team is,” Bush wrote.
She appeared to be tweeting in the aftermath of Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson spitting at Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers. The NFL suspended Gardner-Johnson for one game without pay, which means he will miss the Week 8 game against the Baltimore Ravens, since Buffalo is on a bye in Week 7.
The post prompted reactions from Bills fans, with several wondering whether the team could benefit from bringing Poyer back in some capacity.
“Is Jordan retired officially? Asking for a fan,” one said. “How quickly can Jordan be in Buffalo?” another exclaimed.

“100% agree. J-Po’s leadership and experience made the Bills’ secondary great last year. This year… dumpster fire,” one Bills fan said.
Poyer spent time with Buffalo from 2017 through 2023, becoming a key contributor to the team’s defensive resurgence alongside fellow safety Micah Hyde.
Poyer later returned to Buffalo last season, beginning the season on the practice squad before injuries in the secondary opened the door for a larger role. He appeared in 10 regular-season games, but an injury affected his availability during the postseason.

With several established veterans no longer part of the defensive lineup this season, some Bills fans believe the team could benefit from Poyer’s experience, even if he does not return as a player.
“Can bro be our DB coach or something pls?” a Bills fan asked.
“Can you please ask Poyer to reach out to Beane about an assistant safety coaching job? And to bring Hyde in to help coach as well, as soon as possible? Despite 5-1, we could really use smart former players who know us and can bridge the gap between 8 new starters and last year’s team,” a Bills fan page wrote.
“It’s a reminder of how lucky we were to have the leadership and connection of Jordan and Micah. And of course Rach,” one fan added.
Poyer previously crossed paths with Leonhard in 2014, when the two appeared in all 16 games for the Cleveland Browns. That season marked the end of Leonhard’s NFL career, while Poyer continued to establish himself as a dependable defensive presence.
Given their shared history, Poyer’s potential presence on the coaching staff could be valuable as Buffalo adjusts to a new coaching structure. The Bills’ unit has a PFN Defense Impact Score of 69.4, which ranks #30 in the league, a clear Achilles’ heel for the franchise.
