Bitcoin price volatility is coinciding with a cooling in crypto sentiment: the Crypto Fear and Greed Index fell to 56, a neutral reading, on October 12, 2026. Bitcoin’s roughly 6% decline came alongside selling in stocks and gold, with rising oil prices and Treasury yields weighing on markets beyond crypto.
Key takeaways
- Crypto sentiment reached neutral, down from a yearly peak of 82.
- The 30-year Treasury yield hit 5.70%, its highest since 2002.
- Myriad prices a Bitcoin move to $80,000 at 56% odds.
According to Decrypt, Bitcoin fell from $86,978 to $81,749.83, a decline of about 6%. The report connects the retreat to broader macroeconomic pressure rather than a problem confined to cryptocurrencies.
Bitcoin price volatility accompanies a sentiment shift
The sentiment index dropped from 67 a week earlier to 56 on October 12. That puts the reading in neutral territory after the extreme greed seen in late August.
The gauge reached 82 on August 26, 2026, its highest level of the year, and stood at 68 a month before the latest report. It measures investor appetite on a scale from zero to 100: zero represents extreme fear, while 100 represents extreme greed.
The price retreat and softer sentiment follow a summer rally that lifted Bitcoin and the broader crypto market out of a bear market, the report said.
Oil and Treasury yields weigh on risk assets
Higher crude prices and long-term borrowing costs have pressured Bitcoin alongside other assets. Brent exceeded $101 a barrel last week as attacks on ships around the Strait of Hormuz mounted, and was trading near $110 on October 12.
That rise persisted even after Donald Trump said the United States would avoid engaging in war at least until November.
The report links Bitcoin price volatility to the inflation and interest-rate pressures that follow higher energy costs. Oil feeds into shipping, manufacturing, farming and travel expenses; sustained increases tend to reach consumer prices. Higher inflation makes Federal Reserve rate cuts harder and increases the likelihood of rate rises, a direction the report says the central bank’s latest minutes describe.
The 30-year US Treasury yield reached 5.70%, a level last seen in 2002. Inflation reduces the value of bonds’ fixed payments, prompting investors to demand higher yields. Higher Treasury returns also compete with riskier investments and raise borrowing costs across the economy.
Bitcoin offers no yield and trades alongside equities as a risk asset. The report identified rising yields and expectations of rate increases as pressure on its price on October 7. Stocks, gold and Bitcoin fell together during the sell-off, pointing to a macro-driven move.
Myriad traders lower October rally odds
Traders on Myriad assign a 45% probability to Bitcoin touching $87,500 in October, compared with 55% on October 7. The prediction market was developed by Dastan, the publisher’s parent company.
The probability of a move to $90,000 also declined, from 36% to 28%.
On the downside, Myriad prices a fall to $80,000 at 56% odds, a drop to $77,500 at 33%, and a move to $75,000 at 20%.
