DIMAPUR: The Tikhir Union of Zaonger village has refuted allegations made by Zaonger Mihkhung Arihako (ZMA), describing them as factually incorrect and contrary to records and decisions placed before the competent authorities.
In a rejoinder issued through its media cell, the Union stated that the internal issue involving the Yimkhiung and Tikhir communities had been examined by the DBs Court based on historical records and relevant documents. It said the court’s findings were submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, Kiphire.
According to the statement, deputy commissioner subsequently forwarded the matter to the Commissioner, Nagaland, who referred it to the Home Commissioner for final consideration in accordance with the memorandum of understanding (MoU) and modalities signed between Tikhir Tribal Council (TTC) and Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC) on January 19, 2022.
The statement said the Home Commissioner, after examining the matter, approved the position and conveyed it to the Commissioner, Nagaland, for necessary action and directions.
In view of the official process, the Tikhir community maintained that there was no question of its unlawful expulsion from Zaonger village or its members being deprived of community citizenship or status. It said claims that the community had no legitimate standing in the village were misleading and contrary to official records.
The statement further said the MoU and modalities between TTC and YTC provided the framework for recognising individuals who chose to identify with either community. It said the agreement stipulated that individuals wishing to become members of the Tikhir tribe should not be prevented from doing so, with the same principle applying in the reverse situation.
On the observance of traditional festivals, Tikhir community asserted its right to celebrate cultural and religious events, including Tikhir Tsonglaknyi, in accordance with its customary practices and community identity. It maintained that such observances could not be construed as an act against or interference with the Yimkhiung community.
The statement appealed to all concerned to refrain from unsubstantiated allegations and provocative statements that could create misunderstanding between the two communities. It said the Tikhir community remained committed to peace, mutual respect and communal harmony while safeguarding its rights, identity, customs and traditions.
The community urged ZMA and others to respect official records, decisions and the agreed modalities, and refrain from misrepresenting its status and rights in Zaonger village.
