Tampa Bay Moves One Win Away From the World Series
The Tampa Bay Rays are one win away from reaching the World Series after defeating the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Sunday. Behind another outstanding postseason performance from starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen and timely hitting throughout the lineup, Tampa Bay took a 3-2 lead in the best of seven series.
The Rays entered the matchup looking to build on Saturday’s 7-3 victory, which evened the series at two games apiece. They delivered another strong performance in Cleveland, putting themselves in position to clinch the American League pennant on their home field.
Drew Rasmussen Delivers Another Strong Start
Rasmussen was the biggest difference-maker Sunday, holding Cleveland to one run on four hits across seven innings. He consistently kept the Guardians’ hitters off balance, limiting scoring opportunities and giving Tampa Bay’s offense time to build an advantage.
The outing continued Rasmussen’s impressive postseason run. His performance helped the Rays control the game from the early innings and put pressure on Cleveland to find answers against Tampa Bay’s pitching staff.
Rasmussen’s ability to work deep into the game also protected the bullpen, allowing the Rays to turn the final two innings over to their relievers with a lead.
Bryan Baker eventually closed out the victory, recording his fifth save of the postseason as Tampa Bay held off Cleveland’s late push.
Rays Get Timely Contributions at the Plate
Tampa Bay established control early, building a 3-0 advantage through the first three innings. Jonny DeLuca drove in the opening run, Jonathan Aranda added an RBI single, and Liam Hicks delivered another run scoring hit.
Yandy Díaz also played an important role, collecting three hits and scoring a run. His consistent production at the plate helped Tampa Bay generate offense without relying on a home run.
Cleveland managed to get on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Chase DeLauter drove in a run. However, the Guardians could not produce the additional offense needed to erase the deficit.
World Series Dreams Within Reach
The victory gives Tampa Bay a chance to finish the series at Tropicana Field. Game 6 is scheduled for Monday, with the Rays needing just one more win to advance.
For Cleveland, the pressure is now significant. The Guardians must win to extend their season and force a decisive Game 7.
Tampa Bay has momentum, strong starting pitching and an opportunity to clinch at home. After winning two straight games in Cleveland, the Rays are closing in on a return to the World Series.
