Whey protein prices soar in India: Why your daily scoop is getting expensive

For entrepreneur Akhila Vijayaraghavan, whey has always been a convenient way to get 100-120 grams of protein every day. “I train regularly, so it was an easy addition to my routine and helped me consistently hit my protein intake,” she says. This is why she couldn’t help but notice how much whey prices have increased over the last few months “I understand that there are broader supply and import issues behind the increase, particularly because India is so heavily dependent on imported whey. But for a consumer, the result is pretty simple: something that used to be an everyday purchase suddenly feels expensive,” she says.

For instance, a kilogram of True Basics and Whole Truth whey concentrate, which once cost around ₹2500 last year, has gone up to around ₹3500, a clear leap of nearly ₹1000, points out Akhila. Other brands aren’t far behind, either. Optimum Nutrition, the protein brand associated with numerous elite athletes, including Neeraj Chopra, Rishabh Pant, and Priya Punia, is currently pricing 4 kg of its Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein at ₹17,649, while the same amount of MuscleBlaze’s Biozyme Performance Whey is ₹13,999, an over 20% jump from last year, when they were about ₹15,000 and a little over ₹10,000 respectively.

Several forces

According to Vijay P, operations and procurement manager at Chennai-based OMG Labs, a functional nutrition brand offering both whey and plant-based protein products, this sudden hike is not the result of a single event, but of several forces coming together. Though India has a large dairy industry, we still do not produce enough whey for the protein supplement industry because much of our dairy processing focusses on products like milk, curd, paneer, and ghee rather than large-scale cheese production, Vijay explains. “Whey is mainly obtained as a by-product of cheese manufacturing, and because domestic availability is limited, we depend significantly on imports.” This means that when there is a shortage or price increase in the international market, it directly affects the Indian market, says Vijay.

“Freight costs, currency fluctuations and other import-related costs also add to the final prices,” he says. For instance, whey isolate prices, which were ₹2,200 per kilogram exclusive of GST in December last year, now cost around ₹3,400. “Apart from the whey, we also have to account for the flavours, packaging, other raw materials, labour and manufacturing costs, which have pushed the overall finished product cost to ₹4,200-5,000 from ₹3,000-36,000, depending on quantity and customers.”

The price spike also stems from a significant increase in demand for dietary protein that current supply just can’t meet. “We are going through a protein bubble right now where everyone is talking about it, so everyone is aware of and looking for protein,” says Chennai-based fitness and nutrition coach Raj Ganpath.

Given that the Indian diet is notoriously protein-deficient, most of us may need a scoop or two of a protein supplement to get the ideal amount of protein, “about 1.25 to 1.75 grams of protein per kilo per day,” says Raj, pointing out that our meals consist largely of carbohydrates, fat, and some vegetables. Even though most Indians do eat meat — a recent National Family Health Survey (NFHS) found that 70-80% consume meat, fish, poultry, and eggs — for many of us, it does not happen regularly enough to meet daily protein needs. “In India, a non-vegetarian is essentially a vegetarian who eats a little bit of meat, so we still rely on vegetarian protein sources,” says Raj, the co-founder of The Quad and founder of The Slow Burn Method, a sustainable weight-loss coaching programme.

Additionally, while other new protein options exist in the market, for instance, functional dairy products like Greek yoghurt and protein milk, gram for gram, even with the increase in costs, “it roughly costs you the same amount of money as whey (if it is a concentrate or blend, isolate is a little more), around 6-7 rupees per gram of protein,” he says.

That is why people like Santosh Raghavan, an entrepreneur also based in Chennai, prefer whey protein to hit their daily goals. Given that he does not cook meat at home, “whey gives me the best protein-to-calorie ratio, allowing me room to eat other whole foods too. It is also convenient post-workout since I can have it immediately for recovery and absorption, without needing to wait for a meal to be prepared,” he says. And yes, he also likes the supplement’s taste. “It helps me think I have had some dessert, which is great for a guy like me, with a sweet tooth.”

The rise in whey prices, however, has influenced his choices considerably, he says. “I used to be loyal to a couple of brands, but now I have become brand agnostic. I just look at the label and pick up what is affordable,” says Santosh, who has also experimented with vegan protein, “which didn’t work for me,” and fermented yeast protein, “which I found decent.”

Options and opportunities

This trepidation among long-time whey users seems common, as Aditi Mammen Gupta, the co-founder of plant-based protein powder brand Origin Nutrition, points out. Earlier, people who used whey regularly often found the transition difficult, “but the thing is, plant protein was very different. Now, with new technologies and processes, plant protein has become much better in terms of taste, texture, mixability...everything really,” she says, pointing out that skyrocketing whey prices have led to “a lot of people shifting to plant protein. They seem to be quite happy with plant, especially when they discover that when they stick to it for a while, they feel a lot better.” As a business, given this shift, Origin is all set to expand its product range, says Aditi, who believes, “I think it is a really exciting time to be in the plant protein space.”

While rising whey prices will likely push more people to try affordable, equally effective plant- or yeast-based options, the consensus is that whey will continue to have a strong user base. “Whey still has strong demand because it is well established in the fitness and sports nutrition market,” says Vijay, while Sahil Kukreja feels that whey offers distinct advantages that justify the premium. “Whey provides all nine essential amino acids, is highly digestible, and is naturally rich in leucine, which helps stimulate muscle protein synthesis. That makes it an efficient protein source, particularly when someone wants a substantial protein serving in a relatively small volume,” says the co-founder of The Func Lab in Mumbai, a functional nutrition start-up that manufactures whey, plant protein, and electrolytes.

As the whey conversation goes beyond sports nutrition, it is now also being used in everyday beverages, snacks, and foods. “Healthy ageing and weight management are expanding the consumer base, while GLP-1 usage adds to this demand because reduced appetite makes getting adequate protein more challenging,” says Sahil, adding that he would, however, be careful not to attribute the entire price increase to GLP-1s.

But Sahil feels that the whey protein shortage challenge may also be an opportunity for the domestic industry to strengthen whey recovery and processing capacity. “Sustained whey premiums will also encourage innovation in plant proteins and other protein sources. That requires investment in collection, quality systems, and specialised processing — not just higher milk production,” he says.

Vijay, too, agrees that the crisis could prove a “strategic opportunity” for India to build a stronger domestic whey ecosystem. “Indian dairy and nutrition companies are moving in this direction, with major players investing in whey and value-added dairy products. This could reduce our exposure to international supply disruptions and foreign exchange movement.” However, given that capacity-building takes time, for the time being, “whey protein is likely to remain a strategically important and relatively expensive ingredient for the Indian nutrition industry.”

And despite rising costs, whey remains the preferred option for consumers like Akhila because of its familiarity, taste, texture, and convenience. “I know it works well for me as a practical way to get more protein,” she says. What has changed, however, is how often she turns to it, cycling it with other protein sources, including fish, meat, eggs and low-fat paneer, “because the price makes daily use harder to justify. At the current prices, I am much more conscious about when I actually need it, rather than automatically having it every day.”
