The Belgrade Higher Public Prosecutor's Office (VJT) and six basic public prosecutor's offices under its jurisdiction will operate enhanced 24-hour duty shifts from October 25 to November 5 to handle potential election-related criminal offenses, the VJT said on Monday.

Two to three public prosecutors from the higher prosecutor's office and each of the six basic offices will be on duty to respond to reports of offenses involving electoral rights, public order, violent behavior and other crimes prosecuted ex officio.
The announcement followed comments by Appeals Court judge Miodrag Majic, who said on a TV talk show on Sunday that special duty shifts had been arranged for October 25-27 and that prosecutors loyal to chief prosecutor Nenad Stefanovic would handle any unrest. Stefanovic is viewed as a regime loyalist.
The VJT rejected Majic's claims, saying enhanced duty arrangements were standard practice during previous elections. It also urged citizens to refrain from violence and other unlawful conduct, particularly attacks on people, property, state institutions and police officers.
It said peaceful gatherings were permitted provided they complied with the Constitution and law and did not endanger public safety, property, traffic or state institutions. It said all violations of the law would be prosecuted.
