By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño has confirmed that Cabinet has not yet held substantive discussions on additional measures to ease the rising cost of living, despite mounting pressure on the government to provide further relief to struggling Belizean households.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Briceño acknowledged that ministers have submitted several proposals for consideration but said Cabinet has not yet had the opportunity to discuss them.
He indicated that discussions on the proposals are expected to begin, although he did not provide a specific timeline for decisions or implementation.
The Prime Minister’s comments come as rising food prices, fuel costs and other household expenses continue to place pressure on Belizean families.
Earlier this month, Briceño acknowledged the need for additional interventions, pointing to existing government programmes intended to help households retain more of their income.
These include educational assistance, expanded free education and adjustments to income tax thresholds.
The government has also introduced electricity relief measures, including an increase in the GST exemption threshold for residential electricity bills from $100 to $200 per month.
However, calls for further action have intensified, with questions also being raised about ministerial allowances and whether elected officials should make financial sacrifices as ordinary Belizeans contend with increasing expenses.
For now, Briceño has not announced any new relief package, leaving Belizeans awaiting Cabinet’s consideration of the proposals already submitted.
