The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has recognised Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi as President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) for the 2026–2030 tenure.
FIBA’s recognition followed the NBBF elective congress held on October 15, 2026, affirming the outcome of the election and paving the way for the new administration to take charge of Nigerian basketball.
In a letter dated October 19, 2026, addressed to Abdullahi, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis congratulated the newly elected president and members of the federation’s board.
Zagklis reaffirmed FIBA’s commitment to promoting good governance and ensuring that electoral processes within national federations comply with their constitutions and applicable FIBA regulations.
The international basketball governing body also acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing NBBF board led by Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, as the federation transitions to a new leadership for another four-year term.
Abdullahi’s emergence comes with expectations of renewed efforts to strengthen Nigerian basketball through improved administration, grassroots development, competitive domestic leagues and increased international participation.
The new leadership is also expected to prioritise athletes’ welfare, talent discovery and development, while strengthening both men’s and women’s basketball across the country.
With FIBA’s recognition, the Abdullahi-led administration is expected to build on existing structures and pursue reforms aimed at expanding opportunities for young players, improving the competitiveness of Nigerian teams and enhancing the country’s standing in African and global basketball.
The four-year tenure presents an opportunity for the new board to address longstanding challenges in the sport and establish a sustainable framework for the growth of basketball nationwide.Alternative punchy headlines
