Shreyas Iyer will return as ODI vice-captain for the upcoming five-match series in New Zealand, having missed the series against the West Indies at home due to T20I commitments at the Asian Games.
The T20I captain will be vice-captain for the first three ODIs before taking over the leadership role for the fourth and fifth matches. Ishan Kishan will be his deputy for the last two games.
This will allow Shubman Gill, the regular ODI captain, to focus on preparations for the two-match Test series, a part of the World Test Championship cycle, which follows the ODIs.
KL Rahul will don the big gloves for the first three ODIs, while Kishan will take over the wicketkeeper’s role for the final two games, with the former set to join the Test preparations.
Rishabh Pant has also been named in the Test squad, subject to fitness clearance. As expected, Jasprit Bumrah will not be a part of the ODI squad, but will return to lead the attack in the Test series.
Akash Deep was back in the Test squad after proving his form and fitness in the Irani Cup and more recently in the Ranji Trophy. However, there's no place for Mohammed Shami in the ODI squad.
Sai Sudharsan also returned to the Test squad, potentially as a back-up batter, after missing the last series in Sri Lanka.
The first Test begins on November 19 in Wellington while the last two ODIs are on November 13 and 15. The third ODI is on November 10.
Prasidh Krishna also returns to the ODI squad for the first three matches, but his availability is subject to fitness. He sustained a left hamstring injury during the second ODI against the West Indies in Guwahati. Anshul Kamboj is a surprise inclusion for both squads.
Tilak Varma and Kumar Kushagra are in the 16-member squad along with Auqib Nabi for the last two ODIs.
Hardik Pandya and Harshit Rana have once again missed the bus failing to recover in time for the series. There was no place for Ravindra Jadeja in the ODI squad which potentially means he is not in the reckoning for the 2027 World Cup.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are in the squad for all the five ODIs, alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Naman Dhir, Gurnoor Brar, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav.
Reddy, Kuldeep and Siraj are also part of the Test squad but have been retained for the last two matches.
