Kentucky Football head coach Will Stein continues to make history in his first season in Lexington, leading the Wildcats to bowl eligibility just seven games into his tenure.
Kentucky improved to 6-1 following its 21-13 road victory over Oklahoma, marking the program’s first bowl-eligible season since 2023. That year, the Wildcats finished 7-6 and lost to Clemson, 38-35, in the Gator Bowl.
Now, Stein has Kentucky looking toward bigger goals, including a potential College Football Playoff appearance. His contract also includes several financial incentives tied to the team’s success.
Will Stein Contract Incentives
According to Stein’s contract, the Kentucky head coach can earn bonuses based on the team’s wins and postseason accomplishments.
With Kentucky already at six wins, Stein is one victory away from reaching the seven-win threshold. If the Wildcats defeat Vanderbilt on Saturday at Kroger Field, Stein would receive a $100,000 incentive bonus.
For seasons in which Kentucky records 8-to-11 wins, Stein is eligible for a $200,000 bonus for each win in that range, according to the contract language provided.
Stein’s contract also rewards conference championship success. If Kentucky reaches the SEC Championship Game, he would receive $100,000. If the Wildcats win the title, he would earn an additional $150,000, bringing the total bonus to $250,000.
The contract also includes incentives for College Football Playoff appearances:
- CFP appearance outside the semifinals or national championship: $150,000.
- CFP semifinal appearance: $250,000.
- CFP national championship appearance: $500,000.
These playoff participation bonuses are not cumulative. However, if Kentucky reaches and wins the national championship, Stein would receive both the $500,000 appearance bonus and an additional $500,000 championship bonus.
Stein can also earn $50,000 for being named SEC Coach of the Year by the conference or Associated Press and $100,000 for being named National Coach of the Year by the Associated Press, USA Today, or the American Football Coaches Association.
His contract caps total incentive bonuses at $2.15 million per football season.
College Football Playoff Appearance Could Extend Contract
Beyond the financial rewards, Stein’s contract includes a significant provision tied to reaching the College Football Playoff.
For every season Kentucky participates in the CFP, Stein’s contract automatically extends by one contract year, provided the remaining term does not exceed five contract years. The extension takes effect 30 days after the Wildcats’ first playoff game of that season.
Kentucky is off to an impressive 6-1 start under Stein, but the Wildcats must continue winning to remain in the playoff conversation.
The immediate focus is Vanderbilt. A victory would move Kentucky to 7-1, extend its momentum, and trigger Stein’s $100,000 incentive bonus.
Of course, given the kind of season Kentucky is having, it’s very possible that UK athletic director J Batt will need to work up a new contract for Stein sometime in the offseason. After all, the five-year, $28.5 million contract Stein is currently working under isn’t exactly breaking the bank for a coach who already has Kentucky back to bowl eligibility.
With conference championship and playoff opportunities still ahead, Stein has Kentucky pursuing major goals in his first season, with both financial rewards and additional contract security on the line.
