We hope history is not repeating itself in the backway. We had to draw this analogy to enable the Gambian people not be dragged into a war of words that has no place in a democratic culture or that of a republic. While in a democratic culture or that of a republic calls for the rule of law and not taking the law into one’s hand, a review of the origin of the parties that are now taking daggers against each other would reveal similarities of the origins of parties that would be same as the parties in the mid 1970s and 1980s. Readers would recall that the GPP and NCP originated from PPP, which did not prevent them from becoming hostile rivals that led to arrests, detention, etc.
In the same vein, the NPP and UNITE originated from the UDP but the rivalry is now taking centre stage. If it is not contained it can have devastating consequences. It is therefore time to take stock of the declaration that in politics there are no permanent friends or enemies.
It should be emphasised that in politics, where all parties compete to provide better service for country and people, there is no room for threats of seizure of property or destruction of life and property. We will continue to monitor the political situation to see whether maturity will prevail over emotional reaction.
