US raises Saudi Arabia travel warning to Level 3 after Riyadh airport strikes

• The US Department of State upgraded its Saudi Arabia travel warning to Level 3 on 11 October 2026, urging Americans to reconsider travel
• The warning followed strikes targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, with US government staff now needing special authorisation to use major airports
• Missile and drone threats, terrorism risks, and strict local laws around social media are among the key dangers flagged for American travellers

The United States has raised its travel advisory for Saudi Arabia to Level 3, urging Americans to reconsider any plans to visit the country. The State Department issued the upgraded warning on 11 October 2026, a day after strikes hit King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.

The timing of the advisory was significant. On 10 October, the airport was targeted in an attack, prompting the US Mission in Saudi Arabia to release a separate security alert urging American citizens to stay away from the airport and its surrounding areas. Flight cancellations and airspace disruptions remain a real possibility, and travellers are advised to check directly with their airline before heading to any major Saudi airport.

Key threats flagged for travellers

The State Department pointed to several overlapping dangers driving the decision. Drone and missile strikes from Houthi and Iranian-backed forces have increasingly targeted Saudi infrastructure, including urban centres and international transport hubs. Terrorism threats remain active, particularly in locations frequented by foreigners such as hotels, shopping centres, places of worship, and government buildings.

American travellers were also warned about legal risks unique to the country. Saudi Arabia's strict regulations around social media use, as well as the possibility of exit bans, were highlighted as additional hazards that could catch visitors off guard.

Movement restrictions for US government staff

US diplomats and government employees stationed in Saudi Arabia now face tighter movement rules. Special authorisation is required to travel through King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, and King Fahd International Airport in Dammam. Official travel within 20 miles of the Saudi-Yemen border is strictly prohibited.

Restricted areas also include the provinces of Jizan, Asir, and Najran, as well as the cities of Qatif, Yanbu, and Taif, all of which now require prior approval for official visits.

For those already in the country, the State Department recommends maintaining a low profile, avoiding large public gatherings or areas with a heavy police presence, and staying alert near locations associated with American interests. Travellers are encouraged to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive direct safety updates from the US Embassy.
