Ngabwe District Commissioner, Stanley Mwendachabe has bemoaned the persistent breaking down of the pontoon that services the people of Ngabwe to cross the Kafue River.
Mr Mwendachabe has appealed for the installation of a temporary bridge to ease the movement of goods and services.
The District Commissioner said the pontoon lacks the capacity to withstand the loads of goods, especially with the bumper harvest that the district recorded during the previous harvest.
He observed that the three Food Reserve Agency (FRA) depots in the district are full of maize which needs to be transported, hence the need for a steady flow of traffic which is being hindered by the persistent breaking down of the pontoon.
And Kairos Samaki, a local farmer, also called for the construction of a bridge to avert the transportation challenges.
Mr Samaki said the security of the maize at FRA depots is being compromised due to the constant breakdown of the pontoon.
Some people are reported to have resorted to using canoes to transport their maize across the Kafue River.
