Obama Remarks on Israel-Palestine Draw Sharp Response From Netanyahu
Former U.S. President Barack Obama has reportedly criticized Israel’s policies toward the Palestinians, arguing that Palestinians cannot simply be displaced from their homeland and warning that continued reliance on military and technological superiority could ultimately undermine Israel’s moral standing internationally.
During an interview with a journalist in Northern Ireland on October 13, 2026, Obama reportedly said that the historical persecution of Jews in Europe and the subsequent search for a safe homeland contributed to the displacement of Palestinians from lands they regarded as their ancestral home.
Obama emphasized that millions of Palestinians cannot simply be removed from their homeland and argued that the Palestinian people are not going anywhere. He also called on Palestinian leaders to pursue their political objectives through peaceful and nonviolent means.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly responded forcefully, rejecting the characterization of Israel as a colonial or occupying project.
«“The Jewish people are not foreign occupiers in the land of our forefathers. Our history is not a colonial enterprise, and our land is not stolen land.”»
Netanyahu argued that Obama’s comments reflected an inadequate understanding of Jewish history and Israel’s connection to the region, which he said extends back approximately 3,000 years. He also maintained that Israel’s opponents have repeatedly rejected the Jewish people’s right to an independent state, pointing to slogans such as “Death to Israel” and “Death to America” as evidence of continued hostility
Obama’s reported remarks have sparked criticism from pro-Israel supporters and allies, who accuse him of presenting an incomplete account of the origins of the Israeli state. They argue that such a narrative overlooks thousands of years of Jewish historical, cultural, and religious ties to the land, as well as the longstanding Jewish presence in the region.
At the same time, supporters of Obama’s position argue that acknowledging the ancient Jewish connection to the land does not negate the historical displacement and dispossession experienced by Palestinians, particularly during the events surrounding the establishment of Israel in 1948.
The controversy also raises a separate question concerning U.S. policy toward Iran. President Donald Trump and his allies have repeatedly criticized the Obama administration’s Iran policy, particularly the 2015 nuclear agreement and the release of Iranian funds following the lifting of sanctions.
Critics contend that Iran subsequently had greater financial resources available to support its missile program and regional partners and proxy groups. Supporters of the Obama administration, however, dispute the characterization that Washington simply “gave billions of dollars to Iran,” noting that much of the money involved consisted of Iranian assets that had previously been frozen under sanctions.
The broader debate therefore remains deeply contested: How should Israel’s ancient Jewish historical connection to the land be weighed against the modern Palestinian experience of displacement and statelessness? And to what extent did U.S. policy under the Obama administration contribute to Iran’s growing regional influence and military capabilities?
These questions continue to fuel one of the most contentious geopolitical debates in the world.
