If elected, the Conservative Party of British Columbia will ban having a provincial general election within 60 days of civic elections.
This seeks to prevent a repeat of this month’s confusion of overlapping campaigns to elect mayors, city councillors, School Board trustees, and Park Board commissioners, as well as MLAs for provincial ridings.
In an announcement today, Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson said his party would introduce legislation to keep the separate elections for provincial and municipal governments from taking place during the same period. The proposed 60-day buffer and restriction would cover the scheduled fixed-date provincial elections every four years and also snap elections.

This platform promise comes as British Columbians head to the polls for the civic election’s main voting day on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026. The provincial general election’s main voting day will be held just one week later on Saturday, Oct. 24, with the six-day provincial advance voting period beginning on Friday, Oct. 16 and ending on Wednesday, Oct. 21. This overlaps with the civic election’s main voting day.
B.C.’s existing legislation already contains a requirement to address overlapping campaigns for regularly scheduled provincial elections. A fixed-date provincial election must be moved if its campaign period would overlap with a civic election period or a scheduled federal election period. However, that current rule does not establish a minimum number of days between elections, and it applies only to elections held under the fixed-date schedule, not snap elections. The Conservatives’ proposal would add a specific 60-day restriction for fixed-date and snap provincial elections.
Doerkson said the Conservatives’ new “Respect Local Democracy Act” would be among his government’s first legislative priorities and would apply regardless of which party holds power.
“Voters need space to hear from the people who want to represent them. Candidates need a fair chance to be heard,” said Doerkson.
He argued that the current provincial campaign cycle has made it harder for candidates seeking seats in municipal government to attract attention to neighbourhood concerns. The legislated 60-day buffer would avoid repeating such a scenario for future elections.
According to Doerkson, candidates in both elections are encountering voters who are unsure which race they are campaigning in, while competing advertising, phone calls, and door-knocking efforts risk overwhelming the public.
“When everyone is shouting, it gets harder to hear anyone,” said Doerkson. “And when people can’t hear, too many of them tune out.”
A new survey by Research Co. indicates that 46 per cent of survey respondents acknowledged feeling confused with the civic and provincial elections taking place within a week apart.
The Conservative leader accused Premier David Eby of calling an early election for opportunistic political gain, despite the BC NDP already holding a majority government and the next scheduled provincial vote being two years away. The last provincial election was held in October 2024.
Eby called the snap election on Sept. 22, two years ahead of the previously scheduled October 2028 provincial general election. In announcing the decision, he argued that U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war and threats against Canada had created circumstances warranting a new mandate.
Late this past summer, when there were clear signs that a snap provincial election call by the BC NDP was imminent, municipal officials and candidates across B.C. urged Eby and his cabinet to postpone the call until after the civic elections.
The snap election call also coincided with the very public organizational turmoil and infighting within the Conservatives, which led to Kerry-Lynne Findlay’s sudden departure as party leader — just two days before Eby made the call. Doerkson initially stepped in as interim leader before taking on the position permanently heading into the provincial campaign. Early on in the campaign period, shortly after the call, the BC NDP attacked the Conservatives for not being able to guarantee who would become premier if their party were to form government.
However, recent polling suggests the political gamble of a snap election call may be backfiring on Eby. A series of surveys conducted by different polling firms in recent weeks and days has shown the Conservatives pulling ahead of the BC NDP, with their lead continuing to widen.
According to the Conservatives, this provincial election carries an estimated $80-million cost.
