In a major milestone for Morocco’s burgeoning legal cannabis industry, pharmaceutical company Pharma 5 showcased the country’s first locally produced cannabis-based medicine at the CPHI exhibition in Milan, Italy, held from October 6 to 8. The epilepsy treatment, manufactured using legally cultivated Moroccan cannabis, marks the Kingdom’s formal debut in the international medical cannabis market.
The Pharma 5 product joins three other cannabis-derived epilepsy medications recently developed by Moroccan firm Sothema, which have already secured market authorization under the oversight of the National Agency for the Regulation of Cannabis Activities (ANRAC). To support the domestic rollout, five Moroccan medical societies have officially approved protocols for prescribing cannabidiol (CBD) in coordination with ANRAC. Furthermore, local universities and medical institutions are actively researching cannabis-based treatments for intractable pediatric epilepsy, chemotherapy-induced pain, chronic pain, and various inflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases.
The production and distribution of these medications are strictly governed by Law 13.21 on the legal uses of cannabis and the 17.04 Pharmaceutical Code, which establish clear guidelines for drugs containing psychoactive THC levels of 1 percent or higher.
With the medical sector currently accounting for approximately 60 percent of the global legal cannabis market, Morocco is leveraging its new regulatory framework and established infrastructure to position itself as a key exporter. The therapeutic efficacy of medical cannabis has gained widespread global traction since being formally recognized by the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs in 2020 following a recommendation by the World Health Organization.
