• South Africans online were divided over whether the crowd's reaction was sweet or over the top as they watched them swarm the pair

A couple got more than they bargained for during a beach proposal at Camps Bay on 17 October 2026. What started as a romantic moment inside a large heart-shaped floral arch quickly turned into a full-blown celebration when curious onlookers spotted what was unfolding and made a beeline for the couple.

Footage posted on TikTok showed the scene from an elevated viewpoint overlooking the beach. At first, a handful of beachgoers watched from a comfortable distance. Then, within seconds, a large crowd surged in to surround the pair, cheering and sharing in the joy of two strangers' special moment.

The clip by @campsbayapartments spread rapidly, with viewers quick to point out that the spontaneous celebration was very South African. The video struck a nerve with South Africans, who recognised the unbothered communal spirit on display. Not everyone was entirely charmed, though, with some poking fun at the crowd's enthusiasm and others raising practical concerns about the couple's photographer.
