The Los Angeles Chargers’ start to the season has been nothing short of horrendous, and one Justin Herbert stat shows just how poor he has been.
Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers lost their fifth consecutive game on Sunday night, succumbing to a 23-17 loss against the Denver Broncos. The team’s form is officially concerning, with a major resurgence needed if they are to achieve anything this season.
Herbert is often touted as one of the league’s elite QBs, but he has looked very far from that this season. The 28-year-old has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns through his first five games. There is one particular statistic that is a fairly terrible look for him.
Justin Herbert is the only starting quarterback to not throw more TDs than INTs in even one game this season
There are multiple quarterbacks throughout the league who have struggled in the early going this season. Cam Ward is getting bust shouts from fans after an 0-5 start, Tyler Shough has struggled. Even Drake Maye had a horrid start to the year.
There is one statistic, though, in which Herbert is behind every other QB in the league. Using data from Statmuse, one fan on Reddit pointed out that Herbert is the only quarterback who has failed to throw more touchdowns than interceptions in each of his first 5 games this season.
There are reasons outside of his own poor play for Herbert’s poor performances so far this season. The QB has taken 17 sacks already this year, pointing to serious issues with the offensive line. Despite all the initial excitement, new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel’s decision-making has also been questioned, with many calling for him to already be fired.
Herbert cannot be hiding behind these excuses, though. Not recording more than a single touchdown in any one of his five games is unacceptable for someone with his talent. There is a lot for him to improve, and fast, if the Chargers want to somehow salvage their season.
