Roughing-the-passer has always proved to be a sore subject for NFL fans. That fact resurfaced once more in Week 6.

Some might consider the penalty, ushered in to protect passers from sustaining major injuries, as a godsend. Others view it more negatively, believing it should be reformed to prevent honest defenders from coming under its wretched glare.

Regardless of where you stand on the debate, it's clear that many don't believe slight contact should come under its purview. Someone appeared to inform some of the NFL's referees, however.

Here's what you need to know.

NFL's roughing-the-passer rules come under fire after dubious calls against Packers, Chiefs

Quarterbacks live something of a charmed existence inside the pocket. Referees are often quick to blow a whistle if and when the gunslinger lands on their backside. While a great many of the collision that draw the umpire's glare are, indeed, excessive, there's a sentiment among NFL fans all roughing-the-passer calls aren't created equal.

During Week 6, the art of the new-age roughing-the-passer call was laid bare for all the wrong reasons. Calls against the Chiefs and Packers left some observers baffled.

Kansas City was the first to be felled by the call. Chris Roland-Wallace thought he had netted his first interception of the year in the the second quarter of Sunday's match. He nabbed a bouncing Justin Herbert pass after it leapt into and out of various sets of hands.

Roland-Wallace celebrated vociferously as he peered at his coup. He would soon be left dismayed when a canary flew from one referee's pocket. Ashton Gillotte was deemed to have roughed up Herbert on his pass attempt. A closer examination suggested that might have not been an accurate reading of the play.

Surely, Gillotte's unfortunate intervention would prove the only incident to ruffle football enthusiasts' feathers, right? Well, not exactly. Hours later, Lukas Van Ness was flagged after brushing Dak Prescott on a drop back.

Once more, the call proved significant. Prescott's subsequent toss landed in Carrington Valentine's hands for an interception. The referees' ruling rendered the takeaway null and void.

Neither call proved all that significant to shaping the final score. Both Kansas City and Green Bay emerged as victors, moving to 5-0 and 4-2, respectively. Still, the sight of seeing incidental contact punished so severely left masses of viewers with a bad taste in their mouths.
