A bed frame is one of the few pieces of furniture you’ll see every single day, which is a good argument for choosing one with a distinct design. Sometimes that design helps the bedding, art, and the rest of the room’s style carry the look, like Thuma or Nectar’s low, minimalist platforms. Other times it’s the opposite, and a frame like Interior Define’s velvet wingback becomes what the whole bedroom is built around. Either way, the design has to sit on good bones, meaning a solid slat system, support legs, and a weight capacity that accounts for two people and a heavy mattress.
Every frame here has been assembled, slept on, and lived with by an AD editor or contributor, some for a few months and some for several years. Our top picks include a Japanese-joinery platform you can build single-handedly and an upholstered wingback with drawers hidden in its base. There are also a couple of budget picks for anyone pairing their frame with a similarly affordable mattress. (If floor space is the real constraint, a Murphy bed might serve you better than any frame on this list.) Read on for our editors’ picks, starting with an AD staffer favorite.

Delivery & Assembly
Thuma’s delivery process is a bit complicated, especially for those in a walk-up only building, as this comes in upwards of five boxes that are no easy feat to get up three flights by yourself. Thuma offers a white glove delivery service for $295, or you can arrange it through a third party like movers or TaskRabbit. Assembly, however, is easier than you’d expect from a piece of this size. I’m a petite woman with middling arm strength and was able to assemble the entire thing myself with a little sweat and no issues.
Sturdiness Rating (1-10):
9, Thuma’s bed frame feels high quality with an easy assembly that doesn’t feel like it’s going to shift or slide every time I fall into it or toss and turn.
Upsides & Downsides
- Upsides: Sturdy, easy assembly, and plenty of storage space
- Downsides: Small gap between drawers in the full-size model
Best for
Those looking for easy assembly that won't cause you to break a sweat
The Thuma Classic Bed is the frame AD editors have tested the longest and recommended the most, which is why we’ve ranked it as the best overall. Contributor Zoë Sessums has slept on hers for five years, and I’ve had mine for two. Neither of us have reported a squeak, a loose joint, or any reason to replace it. The draw lies in its construction: the frame slots together with Japanese joinery, so you can build it in minutes, by yourself and without tools, and take it apart just as easily. It’s made from upcycled solid rubberwood, backed by a lifetime warranty, and the PillowBoard, a padded headboard that rests against the frame, is an add-on rather than a requirement, so the bed can be as spare or as soft as you’d like.
When looking for a new frame, I wanted one with a minimally-minded design that would let the rest of my bedroom do the talking. This one feels sturdy, it blends well into my space, and the drawers are roomy and slide out without any stickiness. It’s top-of-the-line to me, even though it hovers at a price point that’s reasonable for a lifetime investment.
“It’s a great option for a sustainably-made, modular bed frame that will hold up over time,” adds Sessums. It’s this type of confidence that makes us love more than just the brand’s bed. Thuma has built out the rest of the bedroom on the same joinery principle, and we’ve tested the dresser and the nightstand with similar results.

Delivery & Assembly
The frame comes in a single flat-pack box. It’s a bit heavy, but overall manageable. If you live in an apartment building without an elevator or need to take it to an upstairs bedroom, it will probably take two people to carry it up. It took probably 30 minutes total from the moment I opened the box to having it set up, and that included a few errors on my part. Once I realized what I was doing, the actual assembly was probably 5 minutes.
Sturdiness Rating (1-10)
I would give it a 9. In addition to the sturdy bamboo base, the slats Velcro to the side of the frame, so they’re really secure and don’t move around.
Upsides & Downsides
- Upsides: Easy assembly, no tools required, accessible price point
- Downsides: Aesthetically underwhelming

An easy to assemble bed frame that ships quickly
Nectar’s Platform Bed Frame is designed with longevity and versatility in mind, two non-negotiables for digital features editor Kate McLaughlin, who was manifesting a frame that would be easy to assemble and transport for future New York City moves. Nectar’s bed fulfilled everything on McLaughlin’s wishlist with its Japanese joinery design, which eliminates the need for screws, nails, or tools in the setup. The low platform base sits close to the floor (but not so close you can’t store things!), and the frame works with memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses alike. Describing the look as style-agnostic, McLaughlin points out it’s a design that can assimilate into a number of different decor styles, from Japandi to post-modern. “My room leans more midcentury and even though this bed frame isn’t a traditional MCM design, it still fits in,” she says. “If I decide to go in a different direction one day, I think the bed frame will be able to transition with me since it’s easy to dress up or down with bedding.”

Delivery & Assembly
Saatva offers free assembly for their bed frames, a blessing for someone like me who lives alone. Delivery was smooth, and the trio of messengers was in and out within just 20 minutes; they even placed my bed and mattress (not Saatva) exactly where I asked.
Sturdiness Rating (1-10):
10—This bed does not budge, shift, creak, or groan, no matter how aggressively I flop onto it at the end of an especially long day. Even when the storage compartment is open and my mattress lifted, I don’t have to worry about anything moving (or falling on my head Final Destination style) while I’m digging around for my luggage or extra towels.
Upsides & Downsides
- Upsides: Vast storage compartment, high-quality, and no creaking or noise
- Downsides: Kind of bulky and cannot move it once it has been placed
Best for
Those looking for extra, hidden storage in their small apartment
The hidden storage provided by Saatva’s lift-up Halle bed eliminated the need for contributor Kate McGregor to downsize her wardrobe. While McGregor tends to stockpile craft supplies, off-season sweaters, and special occasion formalwear beneath her bed, holiday decorations, excess bedding, and cleaning supplies can also find their way in the spacious cavity. The upholstered frame itself has a minimal silhouette that fits multiple design styles, and the ease of the lift-up gets a thumbs-up from our tester. “The lift mechanisms are easy to use and lock while lifted, allowing me to maneuver in the storage space without holding the bed up,” says McGregor. “The lift even handles my 150-pound mattress with ease, not even creasing a pillow.”
Best Mixed-Material Bed Frame: Castlery Joseph Bed with Bouclé Headboard

Delivery & Assembly
Mercifully, this bed came with white-glove delivery, so aside from clearing out my space and finding a new home for my no-longer-needed boxspring, I didn’t have to lift a finger. The bed arrived in three boxes, all of which fit into the freight elevator of my building in one trip. I did need to get a certificate of insurance for the delivery (gotta stay in the good graces of the co-op board), but that was easy. The movers unpacked the boxes in my hallway, then brought the components into my bedroom and assembled the bed in under 30 minutes. The packaging fairies (read: Delivery service) then hauled away all of the boxes so I didn’t have to. I hopefully won’t need to disassemble the bed anytime soon, but when I do, a standard Allen key can be used to take the headboard, side, and end rails apart for easy transport. Wood slats can either be left in place during a move, or taken out entirely.
Sturdiness Rating (1-10)
The base is super solid, so 10. There is a tiny bit of wobble on the headboard, so I’d give that a 9.
Upsides & Downsides
- Upsides: This frame softens and elevates a room, but won’t get in the way when making your bed in the morning. It’s also made of high-quality fabric, so no snags or pulls.
- Downsides: Does have some space for under-the-bed storage, but might not have as much clearance as other options. There’s also a small bit of wobble on the headboard and it’s a little pricey.
Best for
If you want a low-slung upholstered bed frame that won’t overwhelm a room.
Castlery’s Joseph Bed pairs a two-tiered wooden base with a bouclé upholstered headboard. The combination proved to be the adult upgrade senior consumer revenue manager Holly Johnson needed after years with the “old-as-the-hills” four-poster that defined her childhood bedroom. The low-profile base creates the illusion of a floating frame, while the stain-resistant fabric layers in texture to the overall look. “I love how the upholstered design softens the room visually and acoustically,” says Johnson. “The upholstery is nice quality, too—no snags or sagging, at least at this point—and there’s some subtle variation in the coloring that adds a bit of depth.”

Delivery & Assembly
The delivery was within two days—I was super impressed how quickly it came—just in time for me to put it together over the weekend. In terms of packaging, I liked that the styrofoam was wrapped in plastic so it did not crumble all over the place. All the pieces were well-wrapped, so nothing got scratched or dented en route. The instructions were generally okay, but my husband and I did have trouble figuring out the direction of the headboard and the directions of the legs. The images were pretty small and hard to see and there was minimal verbal instruction. Also, I think the actual pieces could have been labeled better. It took us about two hours to put it together because of the headboard debacle. Once we figured all that out, it was easy to assemble and straightforward. I also LOVED that the wooden slats just rolled out on Velcro strips that connected to part of the frame.
Sturdiness Rating (1-10)
8. One thing to note: The side parts of the frame have a supporting leg in the middle. Once the bed was made, it was a bit wobbly, and we realized that these supporting legs were a bit higher than the rest of the legs. So we just unscrewed them and the bed frame is level now. So far I’ve slept on it without any issue and my two kids have slept on the bed, and it seems sturdy.
Upsides & Downsides
- Upsides: It’s super affordable and sturdy and will arrive quickly.
- Downsides: The headboard feels a little thin, the assembly instructions might not be totally accurate, and the overall design leans a lot more pared down.
Best for
Anyone looking for a simple bed in a child’s room or spare room that they won’t have to spend a lot of money on.
Before upgrading to West Elm’s storage-packed midcentury design, contributor Yelena Moroz Alpert’s son slept on top of this affordable Wayfair find. It’s equipped with an adjustable headboard that “actually looks like real wood, because it is,” something mom wasn’t keen to compromise on. “It is what I would expect and more out of a $350 bed frame,” says Alpert. “It’s a solid choice for someone on a budget—it looks substantial enough and is not flimsy upon construction.” Screw holes lined with metal threads helped Alpert feel more confident about construction, though the simple look left her wanting more. “My least favorite thing is that I wish the frame looked a bit more detailed,” she says. “The wood headboard is a bit thin, and while I appreciate the clean lines, I wish it had more.”

Delivery & Assembly
Home delivery was quick once the piece reached the delivery partner. I was allowed to choose a delivery date that worked best for me. Overall, because I chose an in-stock option, it took about four weeks to receive the bed once it shipped. They provided the white-glove delivery service, so assembly took the delivery team around an hour or so, which was impressive considering the size and weight of this frame. It is very heavy once assembled, so make sure it’s in the right spot!
Sturdiness Rating (1-10)
10. This is an incredibly sturdy bed frame, built to support up to 600 pounds (queen) or 800 pounds (king). While I don’t know the exact weight of this frame, I can tell you it is extremely hard to move or nudge on your own once assembled.
Upsides & Downsides
- Upsides: Upholstered storage drawers, sculptural wingback headboard, upholstered bed frame for warming interiors
- Downsides: Longer lead time, very heavy
Best for
A perfect upholstered bed frame for warming interiors and building a bedroom’s design from a statement piece.
Of all the frames we’ve tested, this is the one that commits most fully to softness. It has a velvet wingback headboard and storage drawers upholstered to match. The headboard is tall enough to lean against for a long read, and the frame comes in stylish and durable performance fabrics like velvet and chenille. Senior visual editor Melissa Maria chose this bed for its impact. She’s a fan of eclectic, layered styles, and this bed’s warm tones make for a perfect jumping-off point to assemble a maximalist sleep setup. Even still, Maria points out its ability to transition between design styles. A minimalist bedspread works as well here as a busy quilt. “The wingback style creates cozy corners and the soft velvet headboard is perfect for lounging on to read a book,” says Maria. The upholstery disguises the storage drawers—also upholstered—for a seamless look.

What to Consider When Buying a Bed Frame
There is a world of bed frames out there and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the options. So before you hit “buy,” here are a few questions you should ask yourself.
What type of bed do you want?
We at AD classify bed frames into four different categories: wood frames, upholstered frames, frames with storage, and platform frames. To identify which of these bed frames types best suits your lifestyle, think about both the aesthetic of your room and what you want out of a bed frame. If you want a frame with built in drawers to tuck things away, a storage bed is probably your move. If drawers aren’t an absolute necessity for you but you still want some space to put containers or boxes, get a platform bed. If you want a big statement headboard that makes a room feel cozy or more dramatic, an upholstered frame.
To headboard or not to headboard?
That is the question. The decision to buy (or make!) a headboard often comes down to two main factors: personal style and space. Having a headboard can help fill some empty space and it can also offer additional support when you’re sitting up in bed. However in other cases and in some rooms, it can feel overwhelming. Opt for no headboard if you want something super minimal (or even monastic) that allows you to have real estate for a few other things in your room. If you like that cozy, full feeling and want a headboard to fill negative space, then get a frame that has one.
How We Tested
In an effort to ensure you’re only bringing beautiful, well-made furniture into your spaces, just know that we test and review every single product you see on this list in our very own homes. Whether those are sprawling suburban spaces or tiny New York City apartments, we made sure these beds are put to use in a real life setting—no labs or test tubes for us. We assemble the pieces ourselves as well as sleep, jump, cuddle and bedrot in them, all to make sure we can stand behind each option on this list. So how do we pick the products themselves and what did we ask our testers?:
What attracted you to this bed frame? Whether the bed frame was the finishing touch to our tester’s Japandi oasis or your mid-century dream come true, we wanted to know exactly why the piece sparked joy. For some, inspiration came straight from the pages of AD. Others were scouted out their frames on Instagram while some were in the market for something with very specific qualities (under-bed storage, an upholstered design, something headboard-less).
Delivery and assembly: Waiting months on end to snooze on the perfect bed frame is not it. We surveyed testers on whether or not their beds arrived within the guaranteed delivery window and how it was packaged. Flat packed in one box? A box per piece? We let you know exactly what to expect on your doorstep with each order. Some of our testers also put together their bed with their own two hands—and let you know if it’s worth it to spring for white-glove delivery.
First and second impressions: Sometimes what you see online isn’t always what you get in person. We asked our testers to detail any notable first impressions, design quirks, and if their mattresses sat well on the frames. We asked if they were ultimately pleased with their choices as well as whether they thought the item was worth its price tag.
Style: We consider it our jobs to make sure your home is filled with beautiful things. AD’s editors take great lengths to curate design-forward styles from today’s top home retailers and report exactly what prospective buyers can expect. We take into consideration different decor aesthetics (Scandi! Modern Farmhouse! Mid-Century!) and use our expertise to pinpoint exactly what kind of home a particular piece of furniture would (or wouldn’t) work in.
Price: We make sure we have a wide range of products that span the affordable to the most splurge worthy so you can find a bed that fits your budget.
Comfort: Our selections are impossibly stylish but also incredibly comfortable. Especially when it comes to anything sleep-related, we’re invested in ensuring the best rest you can possibly get.
Ease of use: We don’t think it should take a rocket scientist-level education to assemble any piece of furniture. We even called out if we think a particular style called for splurging on white-glove delivery.
Sturdiness: There’s nothing worse (or scarier) than a bed frame giving out on you. The frames on this list have been put through countless nights of rest without a wobble—meaning you can rest easy (literally!)
Overall value: We have lofty standards and wouldn’t recommend anything that we wouldn’t also recommend to a friend. We also wanted to know who the furniture may not be a great option for—so we grilled our testers to get the bottom line on whether their frame deserved a spot on our list.
FAQS
Do you need a bed frame?
Listen, we’ve been here. Especially in our very first apartments out of college. The answer is, more or less, yes. Even Donald Judd had a (barely there) bed frame. Even monks lay out a mat (most of the time). The purpose of a bed frame, besides aesthetically, is that it ensures your mattress will live a long, healthy, and mildew-free life. A bed frame creates essential airflow and necessary support for sleep. It’s actually much harder to reap the benefits of a mattress when it’s laid against a hard surface, versus held up along slats that allow for it to adjust with your weight and movement.
Do you need a box spring?
Box springs are becoming increasingly obsolete as mattresses advance further—slatted platform beds with wood slats most often don’t need a box spring, as their purpose is to absorb shock and create ventilation for innerspring mattresses. As we move into memory foam and hybrid mattress territory, these become less necessary. It’s worth checking which types of beds are in need of box spring, but for the most part an innerspring mattress is going to need a little support. A platform bed? Not so much.
Do metal or wooden bed frames last longer?
Durable and long-lasting, metal and wood are both desirable bed frame foundations to consider. Easy-to-clean metal frames can resist termites and humidity, but may develop squeaks or rust. Wooden frames possess natural shock absorption and might have more aesthetic appeal, but are also often more expensive. On average, metal frames can last anywhere from 10 to20-plus years while high-quality, solid wood frames can last over 20 years if cared for properly (cheaper manufactured wood designs will have less longevity).
Should I be using an adjustable bed frame?
Adjustable bed frames are known as good options for those who regularly experience back and joint pain, acid reflux, poor circulation, or sleep apnea, since they can help angle your body in more optimal sleep positions. And if you prefer watching television or working from the comfort of your bed (à la Carrie Bradshaw), you’ll be able to nix the pillow stack you’ve likely been relying on for support. If this sounds like you, just know we’ve also explored the world of adjustable bed frames, many which include flashy features like motion-activated nightlights, USB ports to charge your devices, and massage functions.
