Giants, Commanders most to blame for ugly ending as both choked away chances to win appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Some NFL games leave fans buzzing about spectacular plays. Others leave everyone wondering how professional football teams managed to make so many mistakes in such a short span. The New York Giants and Washington Commanders delivered the latter in a chaotic Week 5 showdown that somehow ended without a winner. New York rallied from a two-touchdown fourth-quarter deficit, only to waste multiple opportunities to finish the job in overtime. Washington then had its own chance to steal the game. That was before a stunning clock-management blunder erased its opportunity for a walk-off field goal. The 27-27 tie was a painful demonstration of how poor execution can sabotage even the most promising comeback. Both teams deserve blame, and neither sideline should feel satisfied with the result.
Wasted chances
New York deserves credit for refusing to fold after falling behind by two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Jameis Winston sparked the comeback. He connected with Isaiah Likely and Malik Nabers for touchdowns that pulled the Giants level at 27. That response showed resilience. However, the late-game collapse exposed the difference between fighting back and actually winning.
The biggest culprit was a special-teams unit that repeatedly failed to deliver when the Giants needed points. Dominic Zvada missed his third field-goal attempt of the afternoon on New York’s opening overtime possession. That wasted opportunity put immediate pressure on Washington. In a game decided by tiny margins, leaving that many points on the field is simply unacceptable.

The Giants still had another chance. Their defense forced Washington to give the ball back. As such, New York moved into a position where one more productive possession could have ended the contest. Instead, Cam Skattebo lost a fumble after Daron Payne punched the ball free. That handed Washington possession and destroyed another opportunity to secure the victory.
Winston’s comeback deserves recognition, but it cannot erase those mistakes. New York had survived its early struggles and dragged itself back into the game. Yet when the finish line came into view, the Giants repeatedly stumbled. Winning teams must protect the football and capitalize on favorable field position. New York did neither consistently enough.
Clock-management meltdown
If the Giants’ overtime failures were painful, Washington’s final sequence was downright baffling. The Commanders had a 27-13 fourth-quarter lead. They appeared poised to secure a much-needed victory. Instead, they surrendered the advantage, survived New York’s missed field goal and fumble, and still somehow failed to convert their own golden opportunity into a win.
Jayden Daniels gave Washington a chance to escape with the victory. He used his legs to help move the offense into field-goal range. With the ball at the Giants’ 24-yard line and 12 seconds remaining, the Commanders were positioned for a potential 42-yard game-winning kick. However, with no timeouts available, Daniels scrambled up the middle and was brought down inbounds. Washington could not get organized quickly enough to spike the ball before the clock expired. The game ended without the Commanders even attempting the kick.
That failure falls on more than Daniels. Head coach Dan Quinn and the offensive staff must own the situation, too. With victory within reach, the priority should have been getting the kicking unit onto the field. Instead they gambled on a few extra yards. Daniels later accepted responsibility. The coaching staff, though, also needed to ensure everyone understood the clock and the available options.
Washington had already blown a two-touchdown lead. Failing to finish the game after getting another opportunity made the collapse even more difficult to swallow.
Serious situational reset
The tie leaves the Giants at 3-1-1 and the Commanders at 1-3-1. However, those records tell only part of the story. New York can take encouragement from Winston’s 326-yard, three-touchdown performance and the team’s determination to erase a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit. Washington can point to Daniels’ dynamic return and the offense’s ability to move the ball when it mattered.
Neither team, however, should mistake survival for success. For New York, the priorities are to improve kicking consistency, protect the football, and execute more decisively in scoring territory. For Washington, clock management and late-game communication must become nonnegotiable priorities. Quinn’s team cannot afford to waste another opportunity because players and coaches lose track of the situation.
The Giants and Commanders delivered a memorable divisional contest. That said, the ending will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. Both teams had chances to win. Both teams failed to take them. Until they learn to execute when the pressure peaks, neither franchise can expect to turn promising moments into meaningful results.
