The District Detective Branch (DB) of police has arrested five alleged members of an inter-district robbery gang over a robbery at the house of retired Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Matin Ullah in Chattogram's Mirsarai.
The robbery took place between 1:30am and 3am on Saturday (10 October), according to a press release issued by Chattogram District Police today (15 October).
The arrestees have been identified as Rahim, Jamal alias Kuddus, Saiful Islam alias Sajib, Anwar Hossain Milon and Hanif.
Police arrested them in separate drives in Dhaka, Cumilla and Chattogram, seizing a locally made firearm, four cartridges, two large machetes and a truck allegedly used in the robbery.
According to the press release, a gang of 15 to 16 people entered Matin Ullah's house in the Shekher Taluk area of Wahedpur union in Mirsarai and held his family members hostage.
The robbers beat him, tied his hands and legs, and gagged him before looting cash, gold ornaments, mobile phones and electronic devices worth around Tk16.4 lakh.
Other items seized by police include a CCTV digital video recorder (DVR) and monitor, a computer central processing unit (CPU), and a broken lock.
Preliminary interrogation has indicated the suspects' involvement in robberies in Cumilla, Noakhali, Lakshmipur and Chattogram, police said.
Initial investigations suggest the gang planned the robbery after learning that Matin Ullah had received a substantial amount in pension and other benefits following his retirement, according to the press release.
Police said operations were continuing to arrest other suspects and recover the looted valuables.
