Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday laid the foundation stones for four projects to improve infrastructure at agricultural markets across the Capital at an event at Azadpur market.
The projects will focus on improving roads, drainage, storage facilities and technology-driven management to facilitate market operations.
Ms. Gupta said agricultural markets play a vital role in connecting farmers with the marketplace. “Better infrastructure helps ensure the smooth movement, proper handling and safety of agricultural produce. The Delhi government aims to modernise market infrastructure and provide facilities that meet the needs of farmers, traders and other market users,” she said.
The event was attended by MP Yogendra Chandolia, Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra and others.
At Keshopur Fruit and Vegetable Market, internal roads that are more than 20 years old will be rebuilt at a cost of ₹9.48 crore to facilitate the movement of vehicles and agricultural produce, the Chief Minister’s Office stated.
“Two temporary sheds will be constructed at Narela’s New Grain Market, which is spread across approximately 33 acres. The sheds will provide covered space for storing grain and help reduce the risk of damage during rain and adverse weather,” an official statement said.
At Azadpur New Vegetable Market, nearly 30-year-old sewerage and drainage lines in Blocks B and C will be repaired. “Measures to tackle sinking, damaged and blocked pipelines, as well as water leakage, will help reduce waterlogging, maintain cleanliness and improve market operations,” the statement said.
A ‘Slow-Speed Weigh-in-Motion System’ will also be installed at the entry and exit gates of Azadpur Fruit and Vegetable Market. The system will allow commercial vehicles to be weighed without coming to a complete halt, while electronic records of vehicle weights will improve transparency and accountability in market operations, the Chief Minister said.
