Few names can shake up the football conversation like Lionel Messi. A single rumor about his plans can fill timelines and group chats within a few hours. This awards season is proving that once again.
Fans love a mystery, and this one has plenty of moving parts. Some details are solid facts backed by reliable reporting. Others are simple whispers that spread fast online and deserve a much closer look.
A night with huge stakes in London
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony takes place on October 26 in London. The glitzy awards night will be held at the London Palladium theater. It also marks the 70th anniversary of this famous football award.
Ousmane Dembélé won the men’s Ballon d’Or in 2025. It was his first time winning the honor. This year a new name could lift the trophy, or Messi could add to his own record of eight.
Stanley Matthews won the first Ballon d’Or in 1956, earning recognition for his outstanding performances with Blackpool. At 41, he became the oldest player ever to receive the prestigious award, setting a remarkable record that still stands today.
Where the reports about Messi began
Reports circulating ahead of the October 26 Ballon d’Or ceremony suggested Lionel Messi could travel to London with his family. The speculation also sparked excitement over the possibility of the Argentine star winning a record-extending ninth trophy.
Other reports suggested Messi might present the award to this year’s winner. Some attributed that claim to a reporter named Juan Jesus. However, journalist Fabrizio Romano subsequently challenged the presenter story, casting doubt on Messi’s reported role.
Messi last won the Ballon d’Or in 2023, collecting his eighth trophy. He was absent from the shortlist in 2024 and 2025 before returning as a nominee in 2026. His comeback gives fans another reason to follow the ceremony.
What Fabrizio Romano actually said
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano publicly pushed back on the presenter rumors this week. He said Messi will not present any awards to the winners because he has not received an invitation for that specific role.
Romano also noted that Messi’s attendance at the gala has not been confirmed. That means the family trip story remains a rumor for now. Fans will likely get a clear answer closer to the ceremony.
Until the ceremony arrives, treat every claim with a little care. Early reports can change quickly in the days before a major event. Official confirmation should come from the Ballon d’Or organizers or Messi himself.
How Messi lit up the World Cup
Messi opened the 2026 World Cup with a stunning hat trick against Algeria. It came on his 200th international appearance for Argentina. That night he matched Miroslav Klose’s World Cup scoring record of 16 goals.
Messi then scored twice against Austria on June 22 in Texas. Those goals made him the all-time leading scorer in men’s World Cup history. He also missed a penalty earlier in that same game.
Messi finished the tournament with 8 goals and 4 assists before announcing his international retirement on August 31. That was a remarkable output for a player who turned 39 during the World Cup.
Spain spoiled the perfect farewell
Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final on July 19. Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in the 106th minute. Argentina finished the match with 10 players after Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card late in regulation.
It was Argentina’s seventh World Cup final and fourth defeat in the tournament’s championship match. Messi’s appearance became his final World Cup game. On August 31, the Argentine star officially announced his retirement from international football at age 39.
Spain’s Rodri also enjoyed a memorable tournament. He received the Golden Ball as the best player of the 2026 World Cup, helping Spain secure its second world championship. The midfielder, who won the 2024 Ballon d’Or, is among the nominees for the 2026 award.
Little-known fact:Messi‘s 2026 World Cup opener against Algeria fell exactly 20 years to the day after his first World Cup appearance in 2006. He marked it with a hat trick.
Messi’s numbers keep him in the race
Messi not only shone on the international stage. He won the 2025 MLS Golden Boot after scoring 29 goals for Inter Miami. He also added 19 assists, which gave him 48 total goal contributions.
Voters now face a very tough balancing act. They must weigh Messi’s World Cup and MLS exploits against a pool of nominees dominated by Europe’s top performers. That is no easy comparison for the voters.
Messi is the only player ever to win the Ballon d’Or with three different clubs. He also did it while playing outside Europe for Inter Miami, which was a first for any winner.
Rivals who could spoil the party
Fabián Ruiz is the only player to win both the Champions League and World Cup finals in 2026. The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder helped Spain defeat Argentina in July. Fellow Spain international Ferran Torres is also on the Ballon d’Or shortlist after scoring the winning goal in the World Cup final.
Cristiano Ronaldo holds the all-time record with 18 Ballon d’Or nominations. Messi is just 1 behind with 17. Ronaldo is absent from the 2026 shortlist, meaning the longtime rivals will not compete for this year’s award.
The men’s shortlist includes several major stars, including Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé. Players based outside Europe’s major leagues are also represented, including Sadio Mané of Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr.
What to watch on ceremony night
Messi is not the only Argentine in the running. Lautaro Martínez of Inter Milan is nominated for the men’s prize. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez is up for the Yashin Trophy, which honors the year’s best goalkeeper.
If Messi does show up, cameras will find him fast. A surprise cameo would add emotion to a night built on history. Even without an award in his hands, he could still steal the headlines.
Mark October 26 on your calendar if you love football. The winner and the truth about Messi’s plans may finally become clear. Whatever happens in London, fans will have plenty to talk about for weeks.
