Regional security officials have rejected a proposed curfew in Mubende District’s Buweekula South Constituency, distancing themselves from restrictions announced by local leaders as residents remain fearful following a series of killings.
The proposal had been announced by Kayebe Sub-county Chairperson Moses Achiri in response to growing insecurity in the affected communities.
The matter was discussed during a security meeting at the Mubende Resident District Commissioner’s (RDC) office, attended by Wamala Regional Police Commander Godfrey Achiria and other security officials.
Achiri said the Kayebe Sub-county security team had resolved to restrict movement at different times in Kayebe and Kiteenga as part of efforts to protect residents.
“We sat as the Kayebe Sub-county security team in Buweekula South and resolved to impose a curfew starting at 10pm in Kayebe Sub-county, while in Kiteenga, the curfew would start at 9pm,” Achiri said.
However, Achiria distanced the security agencies from the proposed restrictions, telling Nile Post shortly after the meeting that no official curfew had been imposed in the area.
The rejection leaves security operations and investigations as the main measures being pursued by authorities to address the killings and reassure residents.
Meanwhile, Buweekula South MP Dedan Mubangizi welcomed the deployment of additional security personnel and planned operations, expressing support for government efforts to arrest those responsible and restore calm.
“We thank the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for responding swiftly to the call following the attacks by assailants. We have also worked together with local security teams to ensure that the area remains calm,” Mubangizi said.
Police investigations into the killings are continuing, while residents hope the additional deployments and ongoing operations will lead to arrests and end the attacks that have left communities living in fear.
