The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) have strengthened their strategic partnership to enhance cooperation in early warning systems, satellite applications and institutional development.
The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, said the partnership demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing meteorological development globally.
Anosike, who spoke at the 2026 Alliance for Hydromet Development Annual Meeting, called for NiMet and CMA to formalise their collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) guided by Nigeria’s socioeconomic needs and practical meteorological requirements.
The CMA Deputy Administrator, Mr Song Shanyun, expressed appreciation to Anosike and congratulated the Nigerian Government on hosting the annual meeting.
He said Nigeria, through NiMet, had demonstrated strong leadership, affirming CMA’s readiness to support the development of meteorology in Nigeria and beyond.
Shanyun said the cooperation between the two countries as important and identified three priority areas for engagement: the joint development of the MAZU operational platform for Nigeria; expanded use of Fengyun satellite technology to strengthen meteorological observation; and enhanced capacity-building and institutional development.
At the end of the engagement, CMA presented NiMet with two tablet devices equipped with the MAZU artificial intelligence agent for urban multi-hazard early warning.
The devices are intended to serve as dedicated intelligent terminals for delivering meteorological early-warning information, further strengthening efforts to improve early warning services and disaster preparedness in Nigeria.
