DATA Network is shutting down its own blockchain and rebuilding on Sui, backed by a fresh Sui Foundation investment.
The Sui Foundation has agreed to invest $30 million in DATA Network, a protocol built around supplying data for artificial intelligence applications. The announcement, reported on October 12, pairs the capital commitment with a technical migration: DATA Network is retiring its own standalone blockchain and rebuilding its infrastructure on Sui.
DATA Network's decision to give up an independent chain is notable on its own. Many crypto projects launch dedicated blockchains to maintain full control over transaction fees, governance, and technical roadmaps. Walking away from that setup suggests the team judged the costs of running its own chain, including security, validator incentives, and developer tooling, outweighed the benefits compared to building atop an established network like Sui.
Sui, developed by Mysten Labs, has positioned itself as a high-throughput layer-1 blockchain designed for fast settlement and parallel transaction processing. The Sui Foundation, which oversees ecosystem growth and funding independent of the core development company, has used direct investments and grants to pull projects onto the network. The DATA Network deal fits that pattern, extending Sui's reach into the intersection of blockchain infrastructure and AI data markets.
The AI-data niche within crypto has drawn increasing attention as developers look for ways to source, verify, and monetize data sets used to train machine learning models. Projects in this space often promise decentralized alternatives to centralized data brokers, arguing that blockchain-based verification and payment rails can improve transparency around data provenance and usage rights.
Neither the Sui Foundation nor DATA Network has published a detailed breakdown of how the $30 million will be allocated, according to the reporting. Typical uses for this kind of foundation investment include funding engineering work tied to the migration, supporting liquidity or token incentives, and covering operational costs during the transition away from the old chain.
The migration also underscores a broader trend of layer-1 foundations competing to host specialized protocols rather than compete purely on general-purpose blockchain features. By absorbing established projects like DATA Network, Sui adds to its roster of applications without having to build the underlying technology itself, while the migrating project gains access to Sui's existing user base, tooling, and security infrastructure.
Market Impact
A $30 million foundation investment is a meaningful sum for a single protocol migration, and it signals the Sui Foundation's continued willingness to spend on ecosystem expansion. For Sui, adding an AI-data protocol could help diversify its application layer beyond decentralized finance and gaming use cases that dominate many layer-1 ecosystems.
For DATA Network, moving off an independent chain removes the operational burden of maintaining validator infrastructure and consensus security on its own. This shift could allow the team to focus resources on product development rather than base-layer maintenance, though it also ties the project's technical fate more closely to Sui's performance and uptime going forward.
The deal illustrates how layer-1 foundations are using direct capital to recruit specialized protocols, particularly in fast-growing niches like AI data infrastructure, rather than relying solely on organic developer adoption.
