Cisco Webex is the first major collaboration platform to ship an agentic AI framework for meetings. Claude Managed Agents join as team members, and MCP integration brings Webex context into OpenAI dots. The question is whether enterprises will actually deploy them.
Cisco Webex announced an agentic AI framework at WebexOne 2026 on October 7, marking the first major collaboration platform to ship purpose-built infrastructure for autonomous agents in meeting and collaboration environments. The framework introduces Collaborative AI Agents that can be invited into meetings, spaces, and calls to execute multi-step work, alongside Claude Managed Agents that join as team members within Webex.
The announcement extends beyond the meeting room. Webex is integrating MCP support to bring Webex context into OpenAI dots, enabling AI assistants to access meeting data, transcripts, and organizational context. With 82 million calling users across Webex, UCM, and BroadWorks, the platform’s scale gives this integration immediate enterprise reach.
The gap between experimentation and production remains stark. A Cisco survey from March 2026 found that 85% of organizations are experimenting with AI agents, but only 5% have reached broad production deployment. This 80-percentage-point gap between intent and execution mirrors the infrastructure bottleneck that other enterprise platforms are grappling with. Cisco’s framework attempts to close this gap by providing the security and governance layer that enterprises require before deploying agents at scale.
Security is addressed through AI Defense, Cisco’s security layer that integrates with Splunk telemetry. This provides the observability and threat detection capabilities that enterprise IT teams need to monitor agent behavior in real time. The combination of Cisco’s existing security infrastructure with the new agentic framework creates a governance model that other collaboration platforms have not yet matched.
The competitive landscape is shifting rapidly. OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, and Slack have all shipped agent workspaces, but Cisco is the first to bring agents specifically into the live meeting room as participants. This distinction matters because meetings are where real-time decisions happen, where context is richest, and where the gap between AI assistance and autonomous action is most consequential. An agent that can join a meeting, take notes, execute follow-up tasks, and coordinate across teams represents a fundamentally different capability than an agent confined to a chat interface.
The enterprise implications are significant. As organizations increasingly adopt hybrid work models, the meeting room has become the primary interface for collaboration. By embedding agentic capabilities directly into this interface, Cisco is positioning Webex as the platform where AI agents become first-class participants in the work process, not just tools invoked from a sidebar.
