Northwestern football has dealt with its fair share of injuries this season, but the latest concern could be one of the most significant yet.
Star defensive back Robert Fitzgerald has been listed as questionable ahead of Saturday’s Big Ten matchup against Michigan State, raising questions about whether one of Northwestern’s most important defensive players will be available.
For a Wildcats team looking to improve to 5-1 and earn its first road victory of the season, Fitzgerald’s availability is something fans should be monitoring closely.
The fifth-year defensive back has been one of Northwestern’s most consistent performers, serving as both a leader and a difference-maker in the secondary.
Through five games, Fitzgerald leads the Wildcats with 49 total tackles while adding two interceptions, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery.
And his latest performance against Ball State showed exactly why he is so valuable.
During Northwestern’s dominant 45-14 victory, Fitzgerald recorded three tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown, helping the Wildcats extend their lead to 31-7 late in the second quarter.
It was his second interception of the season and the first defensive touchdown of his collegiate career. But what makes his current injury status particularly interesting is what happened during that same game.
Fitzgerald was seen spending time on a stationary bike along the Northwestern sideline before eventually returning to action.
Although he was able to get back on the field, his questionable designation ahead of Michigan State raises concerns about his availability for another important conference matchup.
The nature and severity of any potential injury have not been publicly established, making it difficult to determine whether his status is simply precautionary or something more significant.
And considering how important Fitzgerald has been to Northwestern’s defense, the Wildcats will certainly hope to have him available.
His performance against Ball State was impressive enough to earn recognition on Pro Football Focus’ National Team of the Week.
Fitzgerald received a 93.7 defensive grade and a 92.6 coverage grade, with the latter ranking first nationally among players who logged at least 15 snaps during the week.
It also marked his second consecutive appearance on PFF’s Big Ten Team of the Week. But Fitzgerald’s impact goes well beyond one game.
Last season, he earned second-team All-Big Ten honors after leading Northwestern with 115
For head coach David Braun, having a player with Fitzgerald’s experience and production in the secondary is extremely valuable.
His ability to read opposing quarterbacks, make open-field tackles and create turnovers has helped Northwestern establish a defensive identity built around physicality and discipline.
And with the Wildcats already dealing with several injuries across their roster, potentially losing another key defensive contributor would be far from ideal.
Northwestern has dealt with availability concerns involving defensive backs Braden Turner and Damon Walters, among others, making depth in the secondary an important factor heading into Saturday.
The Wildcats have been impressive offensively under Chip Kelly, but their defense will also need to deliver if Northwestern hopes to secure its first road victory of the season.
Fitzgerald’s leadership, tackling ability and experience would certainly help that effort.
There is still time for his status to improve before kickoff, and a questionable designation does not necessarily mean he will miss Saturday’s game.
However, with Northwestern preparing for another important conference matchup, his availability could have a significant impact on how the Wildcats approach the game defensively.
Fitzgerald has already proven he can change a game with one play.
Now, Northwestern fans will be hoping he gets the opportunity to do it again against Michigan State.
