Stripe wants your next overseas purchase to skip the currency exchange counter entirely. The payments company and its partner Plasma have announced plans for payment cards that let people spend stablecoins across five currencies, with availability targeted for more than 100 countries in 2027.
Using stablecoins to move the money behind each payment lets users avoid currency exchange fees. It also removes the wait for traditional international transfers to clear before the funds can be spent.
What Stripe and Plasma are actually building
The partnership was announced on October 15, 2026. It extends Stripe’s existing multi-currency stablecoin card infrastructure rather than starting from a blank page.
The cards will support five fiat currencies:
- US dollar (USD)
- Brazilian real (BRL)
- Euro (EUR)
- Mexican peso (MXN)
- Colombian peso (COP)
On the stablecoin side, supported assets include USDC and OUSD, along with other options compliant with the GENIUS Act. Users will be able to spend directly from balances held in any of these currencies or stablecoins.
The research points to planned enhancements around automatic currency selection at the point of purchase.
Where the service stands today
The service is already operational in over 30 countries. The 2027 goal is to push that footprint past 100 countries.
Monthly spending through Stripe’s stablecoin card infrastructure is estimated at approximately $1.2 billion as of 2026.
Plasma’s role in the arrangement
Plasma runs a blockchain built specifically for stablecoin transactions. It also operates Plasma One, a neobank app. Under the partnership, Plasma One customers’ multi-currency accounts will transition to Stripe’s card infrastructure.
What this means for stablecoins and payments
The currency mix is telling. Three of the five fiat currencies—the real, the Mexican peso and the Colombian peso—come from Latin America.
The emphasis on GENIUS Act-compliant stablecoins signals that Stripe is building with regulators in view.
