UKHRUL: The World Meetei Council (WMC) has criticised chief minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh over his reported remark that “not much force can be used” as the issue was “very delicate and sensitive” in connection with the killing of three woodcutters at Khongbal, Sunurok, near Nongshum, allegedly by Kuki militants.
WMC secretary general Yambem Arun Meetei questioned the chief minister’s response to the killings, describing it as disappointing and deplorable.

The World Meetei Council said the people of Manipur had endured prolonged violence, insecurity and uncertainty and needed decisive leadership, accountability and justice rather than explanations for the government’s perceived inability to act.
“The identity, influence or political affiliation of the perpetrators must never determine the government’s response,” the WMC said, adding that justice must not be selective and the rule of law must not bend to political convenience.
It also questioned the silence of BJP leaders and the BJP member of Parliament, whom it accused of having been vocal in demanding a resignation in connection with the sexual harassment controversy involving MP Bimol Akoijam, even while the matter was before the court.
It asked whether the deaths of three woodcutters deserved the same urgency and demand for accountability, questioning what it described as the absence of similar expressions of concern.
The WMC urged the government to act firmly against serious crimes, irrespective of the identity of those responsible, and called for impartial justice and accountability.
“The people of Manipur deserve answers, not excuses. They deserve security, not helpless statements,” the council said, adding that the loss of innocent lives must be met with decisive action.
The statement said that the lives of people must never become a “delicate and sensitive” political inconvenience.
