Crystal Palace pressure grows after Pierre Sage hit by Brighton humiliation
Crystal Palace are in a mess, and there is no tidy way to dress it up. A 5-0 defeat to Brighton is bad in any season, at any stage. In this context, it is worse. Standard Sport reports that Pierre Sage is now under major pressure after Palace suffered their “humiliating 5-0 defeat by Brighton” and “heaviest loss in 70 years” against their fiercest rivals.
That sort of result changes the temperature quickly. Palace conceded “three goals inside the opening 10 minutes at the Amex Stadium”, which tells you everything about their organisation, focus and readiness. This was not a narrow defeat decided by moments. It was a structural collapse.
Sage has “won just two of their first seven Premier League games” and, according to Standard Sport, there is “a growing belief within the Palace dressing room that the Frenchman could be relieved of his duties”. That is the key detail. Results can wobble early in a manager’s reign. Dressing room confidence going is a bigger problem.
There was logic to his appointment after his work with Lens, but Palace do not have the luxury of waiting indefinitely. Standard Sport says Sage has “struggled to get his ideas across” and that “several players are disillusioned with his methods and lack of communication”. Again, that is not background noise. That is a warning siren.

Crystal Palace defensive crisis deepens
The numbers are ugly. Palace have “shipped more goals than any other Premier League team this season” and have conceded eight in their last two matches against Brighton and Lyon. Concerns had already surfaced in early September over his attempts to impose a style, while the decision to drop Jaydee Canvot after the 3-2 defeat to Ipswich “drew criticism”.
A 0-0 draw with Leeds bought him time. It did not buy him certainty. Standard Sport adds that Sage’s future is “under serious scrutiny” and that Palace are already “sounding out potential replacements” before fixtures against Besiktas and Newcastle.
That leaves Palace exactly where no club wants to be in October, uncertain, porous, and waiting for two matches that may define the manager’s future. Credit to Standard Sport for the original reporting.
Our View
This is what infuriates people. Nobody expects Palace to win every week, but there has to be a baseline, shape, fight, accountability. Losing 5-0 to Brighton is an embarrassment. Doing it while conceding three inside 10 minutes is a surrender. That is what supporters will not forgive.
If players are genuinely “disillusioned with his methods and lack of communication”, then the club has a bigger issue than one dreadful afternoon. You can survive bad form. You do not survive confusion, drift and a dressing room that has stopped listening. Once that starts, the ending usually writes itself.
And what exactly are Palace meant to be building towards here? A side that leaks goals every week, changes personnel without clarity, and looks less convinced with every match. The Jaydee Canvot call being questioned matters because it points to a manager who may already be losing trust with key decisions.
No one sensible wants another trigger-happy sacking, but sentiment gets you relegated. Besiktas and Newcastle now feel like rescue missions. If there is no response, no steel, no sign that players know what they are doing, then the club has to act. Palace cannot sleepwalk through this because the warning signs are already flashing bright red.
