Mashujaa Day 2026 had its fair share of speeches, cultural performances and patriotic pageantry in Eldoret on Thursday, but none of it came close to the moment comedian Dr Ofweneke left senior government officials trailing in a sprint that brought Kipchoge Keino Stadium to its feet.

The race, staged as a ceremonial interlude at the national celebrations held under the theme:
"Mashujaa Day 2026: Honouring Kenya's Heroes — Ngao Yetu, Ustawi Michezoni na Uchumi Bora", was intended as a nod to the North Rift's legendary athletics heritage. What unfolded had very little to do with ceremony.
How Ofweneke won the race
Five men lined up on the track, all dressed in Kenya colours. PS Fikirini Jacobs stood directly beside Ofweneke, while Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen took his position at the far end of the lineup. A veteran athlete in a black Kenya vest numbered 2375 and Dennis Itumbi completed the field.
The moment the starter gave the cue, Ofweneke, wearing a white tank top and green trousers, burst to the front. Within the first 10 metres he had already opened a clear lead, pumping his arms as his green trousers flapped at full stride.
Fikirini gave chase but could not close the gap, finishing second, while Murkomen, who had been seen waving and laughing with the crowd before the race began, jogged in at the back to warm applause.
As Ofweneke crossed the finish line with both arms raised, the MC bellowed "Mzee wa michezo!" and the main pavilion, where President William Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Uasin Gishu governor Jonathan Bii were seated, erupted in laughter.
Kenyans react online
The sprint quickly took on a life of its own on social media. Kenyans watching on TikTok Live, Facebook and X crowned the comedian the "Mashujaa of Mashujaa Day," with comments including "The only man who has ever outrun the government and survived to tell the tale" and calls for "Ofweneke for 2028 Olympics!"
The race was one of several interludes between the day's official addresses, which also featured cultural dances from Nandi, Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties, co-hosting the national fete together for the first time. The newly renovated stadium accommodated around 15,000 people, with overflow screens set up across Eldoret after CS Murkomen had earlier assured the public of beefed-up security arrangements.
In the Home of Champions, it was the funniest man who took the tape.
