Kano shuts nine private schools over registration violations

The Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (KSPVIB) has temporarily shut down nine private schools for failing to comply with requirements for revalidation and recertification.

The Executive Secretary of the board, Comrade Baba Abubakar Umar, disclosed this during a media parley in Kano, saying the affected schools failed to regularize their operations despite repeated notices and directives.

The schools are Zayyad Academy, Success International Schools, Sunshine International School, Perfect Schools, Al-Fa’iq International College, Mainasara International School, Shula Academy, Darul Mu’uminat Comprehensive School and Hanan International School.

Umar said the board had identified 111 schools that allegedly circumvented its regulatory procedures. He added that the nine institutions were sanctioned for failing to comply with directives to revalidate their registration.

He said the affected schools would remain closed for seven days from the date of the announcement, warning that any institution that reopened without authorization would face legal action.

The executive secretary also disclosed that some of the schools had failed to comply with court directives to regularize their operations, adding that the board would enforce the law against institutions that continued to disregard its instructions.

According to him, the revalidation and recertification exercise was designed to strengthen the regulation of private and voluntary schools, improve data collection, and ensure compliance with educational standards across the state.

Umar said the Kano State House of Assembly had reviewed the law governing the board, which was originally enacted in 2014, leading to an updated legal framework for regulating private and voluntary educational institutions.

He also warned school proprietors against arbitrary increases in fees, stressing that any proposed adjustment must be submitted to the board for approval.

He said approved increases could only take effect at the beginning of an academic session and urged proprietors to follow the stipulated procedures.

The executive secretary cautioned schools against forcing parents to buy uniforms, books, and sandals exclusively from school authorities when the items were available in the open market.

He further urged proprietors to establish duly registered Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), adhere to approved curricula, and avoid expelling pupils arbitrarily without informing their parents.
