The National Sports Commission (NSC) has scheduled its first Joint Technical Meeting and inspection of venues and facilities for the 23rd National Sports Festival, tagged Coal City Games Enugu 2026, for October 27 to 30, as preparations intensify for the national sporting event scheduled to hold from November 27 to December 11, 2026.
The schedule was announced in a press release issued on Thursday, October 22, and signed by Zira Zakka Nagga, Head of the Press and Public Relations Unit of the NSC. The Commission said the exercise would bring together key stakeholders in Nigerian sports to address technical issues, assess the readiness of designated facilities and identify potential challenges ahead of the competition. Blueprint reports
The technical exercise is being organised under the leadership of the NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, as part of ongoing efforts to ensure adequate technical and operational preparations for the Enugu-hosted edition of the National Sports Festival.
The Festival is a major event on Nigeria’s sporting calendar, bringing together athletes representing states and the Federal Capital Territory to compete across various sporting disciplines. Beyond competition, it provides a platform for talent discovery and the development of sports in the country.
Four-day programme outlined
According to the schedule issued by the Office of the Director-General, Tuesday, October 27, has been designated for the arrival of participants, while the inspection of venues and facilities will take place on Wednesday, October 28.
The inspection will continue alongside the Joint Technical Meeting on Thursday, October 29, with departures scheduled for Friday, October 30.
The four-day programme is designed to combine physical assessments of facilities with technical deliberations, providing stakeholders an opportunity to evaluate preparations and consider issues requiring attention before the Games commence.
While the venue inspection will enable participants to assess facilities designated for the Festival, the joint meeting will provide a platform to deliberate on technical arrangements, coordination and other matters relevant to the successful conduct of the competition.
The Commission did not identify the specific venues to be inspected or provide a detailed agenda for the technical meeting in its announcement.
Sports federations, state directors expected
The NSC said expected participants include members of the Main Organising Committee (MOC), secretaries and technical directors of National Sports Federations, zonal coordinators, directors of sports from states across the country and representatives of the media.
The participation of National Sports Federations is expected to support discussions on the technical requirements of the various sporting disciplines, while state directors of sports and zonal coordinators will contribute to coordination between national sports authorities and participating states.
The Main Organising Committee is also expected to play a key role in reviewing preparations and addressing issues relating to the organisation of the Festival.
The involvement of these stakeholders is important to ensuring that the requirements of different sports are adequately considered and that relevant authorities understand their responsibilities ahead of the Games.
Their engagement is also expected to strengthen communication among organisers and participating bodies, helping to ensure that technical matters are identified and addressed before the commencement of the competition.
Venue readiness and technical coordination in focus
The NSC said the inspection and meeting were intended to review technical arrangements, identify potential challenges and ensure that facilities earmarked for the Games were assessed ahead of the event.
Venue readiness is a critical component of preparations for a national multi-sport competition involving athletes, coaches, technical officials and administrators from across the country.
Beyond the physical condition of sporting facilities, successful delivery of the Festival will require coordination among the NSC, the Enugu State Government, organising committees and sports federations.
The technical exercise is expected to help stakeholders assess progress and identify areas that may require further attention. The Commission, however, has not disclosed any specific deficiencies in the facilities or indicated that any venue has failed to meet the required standards.
The inspection will also provide an opportunity to review arrangements necessary for the smooth conduct of the sporting events and ensure that technical concerns are identified early enough for the relevant authorities to address them.
Enugu intensifies preparations for the Games
As host state, Enugu faces the task of ensuring that its sporting infrastructure and supporting facilities are ready to accommodate athletes, officials and other participants during the Festival.
Preparations for an event of this scale extend beyond competition venues to include accommodation, transportation, security, medical services and the coordination of participating contingents.
The Games Village is expected to play an important role in accommodating athletes and officials during the competition, while effective planning will be necessary to ensure that participants can move between their accommodation and the various venues.
The scheduled inspection will give stakeholders an opportunity to assess the state of preparations and determine whether additional work or adjustments are required before the opening ceremony.
The NSC’s announcement did not provide details of the progress of individual facilities or disclose any outstanding projects. The forthcoming inspection is expected to give the relevant stakeholders a clearer picture of readiness and any areas requiring attention.
Festival to promote talent discovery and sports development
The National Sports Festival provides athletes from different parts of the country with opportunities to compete, demonstrate their abilities and gain valuable experience across a range of sporting disciplines.
The competition also serves as a platform for identifying emerging talents who may progress to national teams and international competitions. It encourages states to invest in sports development and gives athletes an opportunity to measure themselves against competitors from other parts of Nigeria.
The successful organisation of the Coal City Games will depend on effective collaboration among the Commission, the host state, sports federations, state sports authorities and other stakeholders.
The NSC said it remained committed to strengthening sports development and creating an enabling environment for athletes from across the country to showcase their talents at the Festival.
Under the leadership of Dikko and Olopade, the Commission is working with relevant stakeholders to coordinate preparations for the 23rd edition of the event.
With the Festival scheduled to run from November 27 to December 11, 2026, the October 27–30 technical meeting and venue inspection will take place about a month before the competition begins.
The exercise is expected to provide an important opportunity for organisers and technical stakeholders to review preparations, improve coordination and address issues that could affect the delivery of the Games.
