Atiku’s camp demands voters list, accountability over 2023 elections

Paul Ibe, media adviser to former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has questioned the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, over his remarks on the 2023 presidential election.

In a post on his X handle on Thursday, Ibe faulted the INEC chairman for describing the failure associated with the 2023 presidential election as a technical glitch.

“Methinks that Chairman of @inecnigeria, Prof. Joash Amupitan, was foaming at the mouth when he sought to diminish the failure associated with the 2023 presidential election to ‘just because of a technical glitch’,” he wrote.

“There was nothing ordinary about a failure that called the transparency, integrity and credibility of the presidential election into question.”

According to him, Nigerians were promised transparency in 2023 and deserved a full explanation of what went wrong and the measures taken to prevent a recurrence.

“Nigerians were promised transparency. They deserve a full explanation of what failed, who was responsible and what has been done to prevent a repeat. Your predecessor’s diplomatic posting does not answer those questions,” Ibe said.

He added that public confidence could not be restored by dismissing the challenges associated with the last election.

“Public confidence cannot be restored by explaining away the failures of 2023. It requires accountability, transparency and demonstrable safeguards for 2027,” he stated.

Ibe called on INEC to begin addressing concerns surrounding the 2023 polls by releasing the voters’ register ahead of the 2027 general election.

“Nigerians deserve credible elections. Enough of the excuses. You better start the process to right the wrongs associated with the 2023 General Elections with the immediate release of the voters list,” he said.
